Victory…at long last

You know how when you wait for something for a really long time it’s just that much better?  That’s pretty much how I felt last night.  Getting beat six years in a row by your state rival is no fun at all.  I know that those Auburn fans who are old enough remember what that was like back when we won 9 times in a row know that too.  It hurts.  And over the past few years I’ve seen that having one team win so often doesn’t really create good sportsmanship in kids, or adults for that matter.  It’s better for things to be a little more even.  And finally, this year, we got the chance to make things a little more even.
We enjoyed a great Thanksgiving on Wednesday night and Thursday.  We got to see most of our family and spend some quality time with everyone.  It was tons of fun and we are still stuffed!  But were really excited to hit the road Friday afternoon to get to Tuscaloosa for the big game!  We enjoyed a relaxing Friday afternoon and had great burgers at Mugshots.  Then Saturday we woke up ready for the big game!  I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t 100% confident.  I know that the Iron Bowl is a different game in and of itself every year.  It doesn’t really matter what the season has been like, anything can happen.  But I was confident in our players and our coach.  I knew that if any team I’d seen could beat Auburn, this was it.
We had fun before the game watching GameDay and hanging out with friends.  However, all of our thoughts and our comments went something like, “I can’t wait for tonight, it will be so much fun….if we win.”  Here we are at the condo before the game (if you look closely you can see Mo’s little existence!)
When we finally got to the stadium boy were we ready!  The game couldn’t have started better with Sara Evan singing the National Anthem!  She can sing!  Here she is coming off of the sidelines with Jay and their kids.  I’m so glad that she’s now one of us!
And here we are before kickoff.  It was just starting to rain so I figured we would need to take a picture beforehand in case either #1 we lost or #2 I looked like a drowned rat because I’d sat out in the rain during the game.
Thankfully it just sprinkled for a while and then it was just foggy.  We really enjoyed the game!  It was a little tense at first but it was nice to be able to breathe a little easier once we got going.  I enjoyed eating next to a sweet older lady who would yell at the players after every single play, “You’ve got to block for him!”  No matter that we’d just run a huge play and gained tons of yards, she thought those boys should block better!  Finally, we got to take our picture with the long awaited score in the background!

It was a lot of fun celebrating in the stadium after the game.  After such a long time we had fun!  After the game some friends came over and enjoyed dinner with us.  I think one of the best moments of the whole day came when one of our friends (who graduated from Auburn and had on an orange houndstooth coat) said that no one had been mean or ugly to her all day.  That’s just what you want to hear!  She even watched the game at a restaurant because she didn’t have a ticket and random people were still nice to her.  That’s really what the game is all about.  Enjoying your wins but not at someone else’s expense.  With that, I won’t hold back saying Roll Tide! But I will hold back on anything else! 🙂
