Couples Retreat

The one good thing about having friends move out of town is that it creates an excuse to get out of town for the weekend for a couples only weekend.  We had one such weekend with Kelly and Tripp recently and had so much fun.  It was a quick trip — Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon — but we managed to pack a lot of fun into it!

We headed down to Tuscaloosa since it’s almost equidistant between us and you can’t beat free lodging.  We first headed to Wintzell’s on the river for lunch.  It was fun to go back there because Jason and I used to eat there after church on Sunday’s the year after we got married when we lived in Tuscaloosa.  It was called something different but the view was the same and the gorgeous day provided us with some classic Tuscaloosa scenery.  And my long anticipated return to Diet Coke! 🙂

We then headed to the Alabama/Ole Miss baseball game.  The day couldn’t have been more beautiful and as long as the breeze kept up we were perfectly content watching the game.  Thankfully, for me, it was a quick game.  Jason and I had gone down prepared for a blowout since our team is even worse this year than the year Jason played (and that’s saying something!) but unbelievingly enough, the very last batter, with two outs, two strikes, and a man on pulled out a home run to pull us to victory.  It was crazy and insane and I kind of hated it but such is sports, you can never tell what’s going to happen!  Kelly and Tripp were great sports and it just became kind of a running joke for the rest of the weekend.

We went and relaxed for a few minutes before heading to dinner at Evangeline’s.  I hadn’t been there since college and no one else had ever been there so it was a nice surprise.  Our food was delicious and the atmosphere was perfect for some heart to heart chatting.  It’s so nice to be able to see friends that you haven’t gotten to spend quality time with in a long time and then never run out of things to say!

We originally planning our weekend timing around the baseball game but once we saw that The Hunger Games opened that weekend we were pretty determined to try and make he movie if we could without rushing dinner.  During dinner we checked the tickets again and saw that the 9:30 movie still had tickets so after dinner we headed over to the most crowded theater I’ve ever seen and went to see it.  We lucked out and got to go into a newly opened theater so we got to pick our seats in the perfect spot and so weren’t squished but the theater filled up to capacity!  Jason didn’t love the movie (or even like it) but I enjoyed it.  There was a little too much gore for me to watch the others in the theater probably but I can’t wait to watch them on the small screen.

After a very late night we slept late and then went to brunch at The Waysider.  It was quite a wait for 10 am on Sunday morning but it was worth every second.  Great food and a fun cap to our weekend away.  We’re looking forward to meeting back up again, hopefully soon!
