Making Masterpieces

All you Mama’s out there know about the witching hour, right?  That magical time between when your kids get up from nap and when your husband gets home from work and dinner gets eaten when your kids are unhappy with anything that you do and you can’t do anything right?  Surely that doesn’t only happen at my house!
Anyway, on this day I was trying to absorb some of that time with making birthday cards for Papa.  James has been very interested in his sister’s crayons and coloring recently and Charlotte has been coloring every free moment so I figured that this would be a fun project that would keep us occupied doing something that they both wanted to do, while also being productive.  It worked for about 15 seconds.

And then James tried to put a crayon in his mouth and I told him “No.”  And I want to defend myself by saying, it was a normally toned “No” since this was his first offense.  There was no overreaction (truly, I mean that) and that this is his normal reaction to being told “No” about anything.

Thankfully, Sissy was succeeding a little more in her attempts and was definitely enjoying it more.

We eventually finished some cards for Papa.  James even scribbled a little on his card.  He also scribbled on another piece of paper that, after we were finished, Charlotte went and looked at said that she was going to “fix” it and started coloring on it some more.

I learned this afternoon that coloring with a one year old and expecting him not to try and eat the crayons? That’s an unrealistic expectation.  But if you’re willing to let him ingest a little crayon (it’s non-toxic, right?) you can get a cute handmade card for your Dad.
