YardBird – Miami

We did most of our eating during our Miami trip at our hotel, The Fountainbleau.  (If you’re there definitely try the spaghetti at Scarpetta and the mac and cheese side dish at Gotham Steak.)  But on Sunday afternoon we wanted to see a little bit of South Beach so headed south a little to find somewhere for lunch.  Thankfully, Charlie had heard about a great “chicken place” as he called it and we set out to find Yardbird.  I’m so glad that Charlie thought about it because it was FANTASTIC and we enjoyed a yummy lunch!
We didn’t have reservations and were able to sit right down at a table with someone on the end.  We got there about 12:30 PM and not long after we got there people started having to wait for a few minutes for a table.  But even then we never saw anyone wait for very long.
Yardbird’s decor is beautiful with rustic bushel basket lights, old timely electric bulbs, distressed wood floors, and hand lettered chalkboards throughout the restaurant.  Even if you can’t get in for a meal, walk in just to see the place!

We started off with some fun drinks that all came in their own signature glass.  I don’t remember which drinks were ordered but I know we got one in a mason jar, one in a julep glass, and this is Jason’s cup above.  Check out their bar menu if you want to know more about their specialty drinks.
Our waitress encouraged us to share our meal as they like to provide everything family style.  So we ordered an order of biscuits to start with and our waitress was nice enough to include five biscuits instead of the typical four (just ask!).  We wondered about ordering two orders of biscuits but she suggested that we get our meals and then order more if we needed them.  We’re glad that she dissuaded us because there was more than enough food to go around and we definitely didn’t need any more biscuits (although the apple butter and homemade preserves were VERY good!).
We felt like we had to get the fried chicken and it didn’t disappoint.  Very crispy on the outside but juice on the inside.

The shrimp and grits were of my two favorites.  It could have been the cheese grits that the shrimp were sitting on that tipped them into my favor!

The steak and eggs was interesting but I probably wouldn’t order it again.  That could have been because the boys ordered it too rare for my taste, not sure.

The short rib sandwich was delicious but my favorite part of that dish were the sweet pickles that you see on the side.  DELICIOUS!

Mom’s Fried Green Tomato BLT’s were a close tie with my shrimp and grits.  They were fantastic! Although, be warned, there are only three in an order so if you want everyone to have their own order accordingly.  They are huge though so splitting them still leaves everyone with a good taste.

I loved the reminder to “Be Thankful” wrapped around their napkins.  I am so thankful that I got to share such a fun brunch with my family.  And thankful that we got to try such a unique restaurant while in Miami.  When we got in the restaurant Mom remembered that it has been featured in Garden and Gun so it’s a popular place.  But don’t let that make you think that you shouldn’t try it.  It’s casual and warm and friendly to everyone and will be one of the best Southern meals that you’ve ever had!

I LOVE G&G magazine! I’ve been subscribing to (what seems like) a million magazines collecting ideas for my new house. But recently I’ve started to pare down since reading all of them was becoming a chore, instead of enjoyable. But G&G will definitely be a keeper in the bunch. I usually read the Good Dog article first.
