Our trip to the North Pole

In continuing our Christmas look back, the week before Christmas we made our annual trek to Santa’s Village.  Charlotte is possibly a little confused about geography now since she clearly knows where Santa’s Village is located in our city but also thinks that it’s the North Pole.  But she can work on Santa’s exact location when she gets older, we were just glad to be able to find time to get to Santa’s Village and also glad that Mom, Dad, and Charlie could join us.  In actuality, Charlie could have taken Charlotte and James by himself for all the attention they paid us, but that’s what Uncle’s are for!

Even though we got there as it opened, there was a line for tickets and by the time we made it inside there was a big line to see Santa.  We ended up waiting about 20 minutes but it’s worth it to see the big guy.  James had been talking a big game that he couldn’t wait to sit on Santa’s lap but he bailed once he saw Santa.  Charlotte had no qualms though and jumped right on up there!

Charlotte’s Christmas list was (1) a purple dress for Felicity, (2) a donkey, and (3) surprises.  Thankfully, Santa came through on all of those and even let some other family members provide some of those gifts!

The closest that James got to Santa was waving bye to him from across the room.  But he has had a clear Christmas list in his head since October.  His Christmas list was (1) a choo choo track, (2) a James train, and (3) a lego puppy.  Santa came through on those too!

It was cold when we went to Santa’s Village (although not as cold as it is right now!) and so we didn’t stay for too long but we did manage to see the regular sites.  Charlotte requested a picture in front of the penguins and they both loved seeing the real live reindeer, even if Rudolph couldn’t make it!

We headed to dinner after Santa’s Village and topped off a fun night with a delicious meal.  If you’re anywhere in the area you should definitely head to Santa’s Village next year, it’s a blast!

Christmas in Dixie

Now that we’re safely ensconced in 2014, let’s look back at our Christmas!  Honestly, December was kind of rough for me.  We went to Disney the first week (I promise, posts are coming!) and then we were hosting a huge Christmas party at our home.  I was prepared for the prep and had most everything done before we left for Florida, but Jason had to go out of town for work during the week between Disney and the party and apparently the stress just got to be too much for me and I developed a yucky sinus infection.  It hung around until right after Christmas so I feel like I spent most of the time in a fog since I didn’t feel great and couldn’t really take anything, but I did try my hardest to enjoy the season and I’m glad to say that my memories of it are great!

We started out by visiting Jason’s parents on Sunday after church.  We spent the entire day over there and it was so nice to get to see everyone for a long stretch of time.  The kids had a blast and we enjoyed visiting!

Our next Christmas was celebrated on Christmas Eve morning with my family.  There were lots of squeals and lots of questionable hits of the baseball once James unwrapped his new bat and ball (and not by James!).  We had a great time celebrating the season with my family!

We spent Christmas Eve with my Dad’s family.  Charlotte joined everyone for the Christmas Eve service at my grandparents church and then Jason, James, and I joined them at my grandparents after James’ nap.  I didn’t get any pictures but Charlotte thought she was so grown up since she got to go to church and hang out with the big girls.  She got some big sister to another sister advice from Meredith and Maggie and we all had a fun night.  Then it was home to get ready for Santa!  This is James and Charlotte posing in front of their cookies for Santa!

We woke up Christmas morning and were happy to see that Santa had come!  Neither of the kids really knew what to expect on Christmas morning and so they were a little overwhelmed but quickly dove in to examining their presents.  Charlotte was overjoyed that Santa came through with her last minute list addition of a reindeer (even if he didn’t have the requested harness) and James still can’t get over his choo-choo track!  Charlotte also loved her Donkey that she had requested.  Why a donkey you ask? Because there was one in the nativity, of course! 🙂

After we opened presents Daddy regaled Charlotte with some awesome puppetry skills and I grabbed pictures with my little ones.

Both of our parents stopped by to see what Santa brought on Christmas morning and then we headed to my parents for more Christmas festivities with my Mom’s family.  I think the excitement of Christmas might have finally gotten to be too much for Charlotte though based on this picture….

We are so blessed to have such wonderful families and enjoyed seeing those that we got to see over the Christmas holiday’s.  We’re still trying to make it see everyone but are thankful for those who have done so much for us and have set such a firm foundation for us to stand firm on.  We hope your Christmas was as exciting as ours!

Show Us Your Life – Christmas Tour of Homes

I welcome you to our home in all of its Christmas finery.  I have had so much fun this year decorating a new home and finding new places to showcase my favorites.  I’m so happy with the way the house turned out and hope you enjoy seeing all the details!

We have artificial greenery everywhere to prevent allergies and because I’ve sworn off real trees after our disastrous tree falling incident a number of years ago.  But I’m so happy with the pre-lit garland that I found at Trees ‘N Trends this year.  I accented with hand-made (and thus very NOT perfect) burlap bows and Charlotte and I used mod podge and lots of glitter to make these paper mache hearts from Hobby Lobby sparkle.  The effect at night is gorgeous!

If you turn to the left from the front door you’ll see one of my many nativity scenes (or activity as Charlotte calls them).  You’ll also head into the dining room.

I kept a lot of the decorations real neutral and just added pops of color here and there.  In the dining room we have a gorgeous 9′ Blue Spruce tree from Balsam Hill.  We decorated the dining room tree with all of our nice ornaments — our Christopher Radko’s, our glass balls, our ornaments from trips we’ve taken, etc.  It sparkles insanely at night with all the glitter and glass and the color on the tree accents the neutrals on the table very well. You can also see our custom art from Kim Wheeler of Small Words Art hanging on the wall which definitely livens up the room.

If you turn to the right from the foyer you are in the study.

We have the same 9′ Blue Spruce in the study but this one is covered with the kids ornaments and those special to our family — handprints, Christmas card ornaments, childhood ornaments from when we were little, etc.  This tree is very bottom heavy because we let the kids do a lot of the decorating but that’s one of the things that I love about it.  There are so many memories on this tree, not only for us, but for Charlotte and James too.  And I love that you can see both large trees out the windows from the street.  There’s lots of sparkle at our house!

And I’m so happy with the way the mantle turned out.  We’ve loved this mantle ever since it arrived last year and it works beautifully at Christmas time.  I’ve got to buy new stockings for next year and I’m sad to have to retire these burlap ones (from The Bobbins Nest) a number of years ago.  They are lovely and the contrast with the burlap and our pewter nativity that we got on our honeymoon is so neat to me!

When you continue into our home you reach the kitchen which we accented for the holiday season.

There’s not a lot of Christmas going on in here, but enough to make me smile.  The real wreath on the window over the sink is the only real greenery in the house and I love it.  I also love the small artificial wreaths that I found at a shop around town.  Jason didn’t realize they weren’t real until I told him today!  I also made a big print to go over the stove and painted chalkboard paint on a cheap platter from Target to add some glamour.  And, as I’m sure you can guess, my favorite area in the kitchen is the collection of handmade items from the kids.  It’s amazing to see how quickly they grow.  We’ve got plans to make more art this week since school is out!

Across from the kitchen is the den with a little bit more of holiday cheer.

It wouldn’t be a tour of our home at Christmas without seeing Frisbee our elf.  Although, to be honest, Frisbee has been pretty lazy this year, using the excuse of fog and rain to stay at our house instead of going back to the North Pole and then relocating a good many nights this year.

Of course we also have other touches of Christmas throughout the house, the kids Christmas trees, a small mini ornament tree in the guest bathroom, and others.

In all the hustle and bustle of the season, we are trying to impress upon our kids that Christmas isn’t about Santa or elves or lights or trees or presents.  Christmas is about the gift that God gave to us in his Son, Jesus.  We love being able to reflect that in our decorations of our home and are happy to share our home with family and friends and with you over this season.

We wish you and your family many blessings this Christmas and always.  Merry Christmas!

Hanging the First Ornament

We have a tradition in our family to take pictures of the first ornament hung on our trees.  And we always hang the ornament of our Christmas card picture from the year before first.  This year we just took pictures of the kiddo’s hanging it (and not very good ones at that) but I’m glad to continue the tradition!

I’m not 100% sure what James is doing in the picture but if I could hazard a guess, it would be that he’s roaring like a baby dinosaur.  That’s his thing these days and he does it constantly.  At least his sister likes roaring back to him and they think it’s fun.  Whatever keeps them entertained!

You can see the hanging of the first ornaments from past years here: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012.
