Rides/Attractions That We Did

Disney Junior Live on Stage – stage show with puppets from popular Disney Junior shows (when we visited 12/2013 it was Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Doc McStuffins, Sophia the First, and Jake and the Neverland Pirates); puppets are not very large and don’t come off the stage so the best seats are center, about 1/3 to midway back; show is roughly 20 but is action packed so little ones don’t get bored; be prepared that everyone sits on the floor and grown up’s will probably feel it by the end of the show!
The Voyage of the Little Mermaid – stage show with actual cast members as well as puppets handled by puppeteers and large moving sets; Ursula is in the show and her portrayal is very accurate to the movie and could be scary for very young children; seating is in theater seats and theater is dark throughout show; lasts approximately 15 minutes; includes lots of special effects such as lighting and actual water droplets.
Honey I Shrunk the Kids park – park with slides, tunnels, and a sprinkler that sprays water; this great for little kids to run some energy out; there is only one entrance and exit so you can feel safe letting your kids play.

Meals

Where we ate: ABC Commissary – Casual fast service dining with a counter; typical fare (burgers, chicken, etc); tv’s showing ABC shows throughout dining area as well as huge posters depicting popular ABC shows throughout

Saw recommendations online for: Toy Story Pizza Planet, Hollywood and Vine (good breakfast buffet), Starring Rolls Cafe, Fairfax Fare, Rosie’s All American Cafe

Restrooms

We only used the restrooms in the Animation Courtyard and they weren’t the best (never unclean just older).  The Baby Care Center is at the entrance to the park so you might want to stop there on your way in if needed, otherwise it’s a trek from some areas of the park.

Characters

– There are locations for characters in the Animation Courtyard — Jake and Sophia were out when we were there (12/2013).
– Characters were also around the Sorcerer’s hat with rather long waits — Stitch and Daisy were out when we were there (12/2013).

Disney with Toddlers – Animal Kingdom Jambo House

Disney With Toddlers

Today I’m going to share our experience with our resort, Animal Kingdom Villas – Jambo House. For your reference, we stayed in room 5229 on the Kudu Trail overlooking the Arusha Savannah.

AK JAMBO HOUSE

We stayed in a 1  bedroom villa which had a room with a king bed then a living room/kitchen area with a pull out sofa (double bed) and a pull out chair (twin bed).  The room also came with a washer/dryer and the kitchen included everything we would need such as a fridge, dishwasher, microwave, dishes, silverware, etc.  The room also had a huge balcony that you could access from the living room and the bedroom.  There was one bathroom in the villa accessible from a hall between the living room and bedroom with a whirlpool tub/shower combo and double sinks.

Our room was very nice and provided plenty of space for our family.  We were very pleased with the cleanliness of the room as well as all of the furnishings.  Our kids slept on the pull out furniture.  The living room got tight on space with both of them pulled out but we only had it like that for sleeping so it wasn’t a problem.  Our room was sided on one side by a viewing opening in the hallway so we only had another room on one side (the living room/kitchen side).  Despite that we never heard anyone else in rooms on the side of us or above or below us.  The only downside of our room location was that there wasn’t an elevator extremely close to our room.  We ended up using the main elevator in the lobby and then walking around to our room.  Overall, a very minor detail.

The most spectacular part of Animal Kingdom Jambo House is the view.  As soon as we walked in to our room the kids rushed to the balcony and were amazed at the giraffes and other animals right outside our room, we knew then that this was the perfect resort for us.  The following are all views from our balcony.

Throughout our trip the balcony continued to be one of the things that the kids loved the most.  I think they might have been content to simply stay in our room and watch the animals all day every day.

Room 12

During our trip we saw lots of different animals in the Savanna.  Tons of giraffes, kudus, red river hogs, and other animals that I never figured out what they were.  Our kids wanted to say good night to the animals the last thing each night and their first question each morning was if they could go outside and see the animals.  There was a feeding place almost right in front of our room and they enjoyed seeing the animals eat.  The hogs were also digging lots of tunnels right in front of our room.  And we were all amazed to see that giraffes sit down and lean their long necks against a tree to sleep.  It’s pretty amazing getting to watch animals at night with the special lighting in the Savanna’s.

As you would expect in a Disney resort, the whole resort is decorated in theme.  Since we were there right before Christmas that included a four story+ Christmas tree decorated in an African/Safari theme!

Room 14

The transportation available from Jambo House is by bus or car only.  And all buses service both Animal Kingdom lodges (Kidani Village is the other one) which adds a few minutes onto your travel time either coming or going depending on the bus route.  I think most of the times that we were on the bus we found that the buses dropped off at Kidani Village first and so picked up at Jambo House last.

Room 16

Charlotte and Jason had lots of fun at the big pool at the resort.  It had a wading area into the pool as well as a big water slide.  The resort also provided towels and life jackets for the kids.  There was a pool bar as well as lots of lounge chairs.

Dining was plentiful at Jambo House.  We took advantage of The Mara (quick dining) for dinner after the pool and to refill our refillable mugs.  We didn’t eat at any of the other restaurants but they looked really good!  We also have heard that they have fires outside with Smore’s fixin’s every night but since our kids are young they were always in bed and we didn’t get to take advantage of this.

Overall, we loved Jambo House and will almost definitely stay there again the next time we go to Disney World.  The service was incredible (although I’m guessing that’s Disney-wide), the room was the perfect size for our family and had everything that we needed, and you can’t beat having animals like giraffes right outside your room!

Disney with Toddlers – Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom

Disney With Toddlers

On our last day in Disney World we were scheduled to go to Animal Kingdom.  This was the one park that Charlotte had been to before even if she didn’t remember it.  We knew that the kids would enjoy the park but also knew that we wanted to get back to Magic Kingdom that afternoon to do some things that we didn’t get to do the day before.  So before we left we rearranged our schedule to cancel our pre-scheduled lunch at Animal Kingdom and made reservations for dinner at Magic Kingdom.

We arrived at Animal Kingdom with plans to do a cursory run through.  We had fast passes for the Safari but ended up heading straight back there after we walked through the gardens at the front of the park.  The wait was only 10 minutes so instead of using our fast passes we just walked in.  It turned out that we didn’t wait at all so considering the new Fast Pass system, don’t use yours on the Safari if the wait is just 10-15 minutes.

Charlotte was enthralled from the start of the Safari to the last second.  But James was pretty unsure about all the bumpiness of the ride and seeing the animals so close.  I think he enjoyed it but he just wasn’t sure what was going on.  Watching Charlotte exclaim over all the animals though was lots of fun and boy did we see a lot of animals!

The tigers were pretty lazy that morning

We walked through the other areas to get to DinoLand.  This day was by far the hottest and this pregnant girl was getting tired very quickly by this point.  Letting the kids play in the Dinosaur park (The Boneyard) was the perfect end to our Animal Kingdom adventure.  The kids got to run free and explore — Charlotte even climbed up a couple stories to go down the huge slide — and I got to sit down and rest.

AK 20

After some fun in Dinoland we headed to Flame Tree Barbecue for some lunch.  We had heard great things about it and it did have pretty good barbecue but living in the South we’re pretty spoiled on barbecue so it wasn’t the best we’d ever had.  The most fun part about lunch was that there were huge birds hanging out around all of the tables so the kids got a huge kick out of watching the birds walk under our table as we ate.

We headed back to the hotel for a little rest and to cool down after lunch.  Once we got cooled off and changed we left to go back to Magic Kingdom.  James had been over the moon for the monorail the whole trip but it wasn’t available from our hotel.  Since we already knew that if you valet at one resort you can valet at another at no additional cost, we decided to drive to the Contemporary and ride the monorail to Magic Kingdom.  I’m not sure if you’re actually supposed to do this, but we did and no one questioned what we were doing.

James was ecstatic over the trip on the monorail and we got to ride the whole track before getting to Magic Kingdom.  The day had turned overcast which was a nice change from the beating sun in the morning.  We headed first back to Dumbo for another ride and another ride on the Barnstormer. (When we didn’t need our FastPass for the Safari at Animal Kingdom we transferred them back to rides at Magic Kingdom for the afternoon.)

Magic Kingdom 22

The only thing that we hadn’t done that Charlotte really wanted to do was ride the AstroOrbiter so that was next on our schedule.  The AstroOrbiter didn’t take FastPasses so Jason and Charlotte had to stand in line and wait. The line looked really long but the app said the wait was only 15-20 minutes so they got in line.  It turned out that the line for the PeopleMover was in the same place as the AstroOrbiter so the line looked longer than it actually was.

Magic Kingdom 21

Charlotte loved the AstroOrbiter and Jason has promised her that the next time we go to Disney that they’ll go on the AstroOrbiter at night since it lights up.  While James and I were waiting on Charlotte and Jason to ride the AstroOrbiter we just walked around the area surrounding the ride.  It’s in Tomorrowland so it’s pretty groovy to see everything in the area.  This was when James finally fell asleep in the stroller.  I guess three days without a nap when he’s used to being in his bed for 3 hours every day finally caught up with him!

IMG_4362

We headed to our dinner reservation at Tony’s Town Square Restaurant from Tomorrowland.  When we were canceling our reservation at Animal Kingdom the day before we were trying to find a table service restaurant that had openings for dinner at Magic Kingdom.  We stumbled onto Tony’s and I’m glad that we did.  We didn’t realize that this was where Lady and the Tramp had their plate of spaghetti!  We ended up getting seated right next to the huge statue of Lady and the Tramp and the kids loved getting to see the puppies during dinner.

We wanted to see the Christmas show and the lighting of Cinderella’s Castle but we didn’t get finished with dinner soon enough.  It was still really neat to walk outside and have the whole area lit with Christmas lights and to see the Castle lit up!

MK Night 1

MK Night 2

This night was the latest that we stayed at a park (other than Epcot) and we found ourselves in total claustrophobia mode trying to get down Main Street USA to see the castle.  So much so that we only made it about halfway down before we gave up, took our pictures, and headed inside the Main Street Bakery to spend the rest of our snack credits on treats to go.  I doubt the wisdom of funneling all visitors to Magic Kingdom through one small street based on our experience that night.  But getting to see the Castle semi-up close was worth the crush of people.

We headed back to our hotel to get ready to head home first thing the next morning.  Our trip to Disney World seemed fast but it was the perfect length for our little family.  I might not have tried to hit every park if I was to do this trip again, but we had an amazing time and our kids are still talking about it and asking when we’re going back to Disney!

Disney with Toddlers – MagicBands and FastPass+

Disney With Toddlers

You’ve read about our use of FastPass+ during our trip and, since it’s a very new feature at Disney World, I thought I’d give you a little information about our experience with it.

In the past, Disney World has provided guests with a “Key to the World” card which acts as their room key, park admission, credit card, etc during their stay.  Over the past six months (ish) they’ve been debuting a new system called MyMagic+ which includes MagicBands and FastPass+.

(Before I get into detailing our experience and what I know, please know that this information is purely based on our use of these services and is not a definitive look at the system and all it’s features.)

After we paid our final balance on our trip 60 days out from arrival, we were sent information to register for MyMagic+.  This led us to register on the My Disney Experience website and we linked our hotel and dining reservations to our account.  We then were able to customize our MagicBands by color and name.  These shipped and arrived about 2-3 weeks before we left for our trip.

MagicBand

When these arrived we didn’t really know what they were, but the instructions said not to forget them and explained that we’d use them to enter the parks so I made sure I knew exactly where they were packed when we headed down to Disney!

It ended up that these bands were your one stop shop for everything Disney related.  They were our room keys, they got us in to the parks, they held our Fast Passes and let us on to rides, they had a credit card linked to them which allowed us to charge meals and snacks back to our card, and they were used by photographers to link photos to our account.  We wore these any time we left our room.  They were created with a special smaller band inside the larger band to make it easy for kids to wear and snapped on and off but were secure enough that we didn’t worry about them accidentally popping off while we were there.  James didn’t really need one since he was two and didn’t have a ticket or need his own FastPass but he wanted to wear his daily to be like everyone else.

In summary, my opinion of the MagicBands, A+!  It’s great to have everything on your wrist so you don’t have to worry about dropping cards or digging them out of your purse or pocket.  They are obvious in pictures though so hide that hand if you don’t want them seen!

Moving on to FastPass+.  This is the new FastPass service and, I believe, replaces the paper FastPasses at the park.  When we were there the MyMagic+ was still in it’s trial so there were still paper FastPass options as well as FastPass+ kiosks, I’m not sure if the paper FastPass stations will disappear once MyMagic+ is totally rolled out or not.

The great thing about FastPass+ was that we were able to choose our FastPasses through the MyDisneyExperience site before we left the house.  This let us plan our route around the park and forced us to do ride research before we left as opposed to walking in to the park clueless about rides and what we wanted to do.  I thought this was great!

However, I had issues with the website reserving my FastPasses for a few days which was frustrating.  I’m sure they’ll work all those bugs out before finally releasing to everyone.  In addition, it was confusing to me how you could reserve passes.  Let me summarize for you what I found.

– You can only reserve FastPass+ passes for one park for each day.
– You can only get THREE FastPass+ passes per day.

Summary: Your ParkHopper option is less valuable because if you hop to another park, you can’t get any FastPasses at the second park at all.  There was a limit to the old FastPasses that you could have out at a time, but once you had used them and the time expired you used to be able to get more FastPasses.  Not so anymore, you get THREE FastPass+ passes PER DAY.  Once you use one you can’t get another one to replace it.  I never found that in any text form but this was explained to me by a FastPass+ kiosk staffer while at Disney.

This new feature of only allowing three FastPass+ options per day and all must be at one park might be only during the testing phase, I sincerely hope it is.  FastPasses make doing Disney with kids so much easier and so much more enjoyable.  By limiting the number of passes to three total per day the amount of rides that you get to “skip” the line on is severely limited.  This makes it much harder to do Disney efficiently or with kids.

For instance, on our first day we did Hollywood Studios and then hopped to Epcot.  We needed FastPasses at Hollywood Studios and so scheduled them for that park.  Which meant by the time we got to Epcot, we had no FastPasses for Nemo or Soarin’ or any of the other rides, some of which had waits of two hours.  It would have been nice to have been able to get a FastPass+ for Soarin after we had ridden and used our first FastPass+ from Hollywood Studios but not only can you not get additional FastPasses after one has been used, but you can’t have FastPasses at multiple parks.  Bummer.

There are a lot of benefits to the FastPass+ system though and the biggest one is being able to schedule them remotely.  Not only could I schedule them from the website, but Disney has a MyDisneyExperience app that allows you to modify, create, and delete FastPass+ reservations right from your phone.  I used the app for this multiple times while we were in the parks.  There are also a few FastPass+ kiosks in the parks to modify your FastPasses but they are certainly not at every FastPass+ ride like they are in the old FastPass system.

Overall, I’d give the FastPass+ system a B.  The limitations on procuring FastPass+  passes is a huge downside for me when thinking about going back to Disney with small kids….or at all for that matter.

Again, please know that the specifics for the MyMagic+ and FastPass+ systems might change in the future or might have already changed since we traveled in December 2013.  This is solely based on our experience with these systems and hopefully will help you gain a little bit of information for a frame of reference if you’re traveling to Disney and will use these systems.

Disney with Toddlers – Planning the Trip

Disney With Toddlers

Let’s talk a little bit today about how we planned our trip.  I had started a Pinterest board for our trip long before we got to actually planning it and it was helpful with lots of tips and advice.  But I still found myself very overwhelmed when I would try and compare hotels and locations and everything else on the Disney site.  So it was with great relief that my aunt told me about Missy Logan at Mickey Adventures who helped them plan their trip.

I contacted Missy and gave her the basics for our trip — when we wanted to go, what we were looking for, etc — and she quickly started moving on our trip after that.  She gave us various hotel options and explained differences in a way that only someone familiar with the property’s can.  We contacted Missy at the beginning of April to start planning our trip but didn’t make the hotel reservations until almost mid-May.  (To put this into month perspective, we got in touch with her 8 months before our trip and booked it 7 months before our trip.)  She helped us settle on the Animal Kingdom Jambo House which we are so thankful for.  More to come on the hotel later, but it was a great decision!

Once we booked our reservation, Missy was on top of everything else for us.  You need to book dining reservations 180 days out (six months) so on June 1 she emailed me requesting our dining preferences.  I would recommend that you look at and make these decisions BEFORE that 180 day period because I’m guessing that our delay in a few days of deciding is what caused us to have some later lunch and dinner times than we would have preferred.  Make sure and specify what times you would like to eat as well as where just to give them more help!

Missy also was sending us information on Disney all the time between when we booked our trip and when we left.  She sent tip sheets and information about services.  She even sent us a recommended schedule of what days to do what parks based on the estimated attendance each day.  She also continuously checked for specials and deals that Disney was introducing that might could reduce our package price!

I know that you can do the planning yourself, but I don’t really see why you would when there are agents like Missy out there who can get you all the insider deals and information.  And you don’t pay Missy or Mickey Adventures anything for their services!  It’s amazing!  I won’t plan a Disney trip without using Missy’s help because all of the behind the scenes knowledge and help that she provided was invaluable!

Note: I was in no way compensated or even asked to write this post.  Missy provides this kind of service to everyone and all opinions and views are my own.  Please see my link/review disclosures for more information.
