All About Nothing

Well, getting back into the swing of blogging has been more than I bargained for with this pregnancy.  So, in an effort to get something out here I’m going to perform a brain dump and just let my thoughts flow freely.  If you’re really bored, maybe this will interest you, if not, I’ll work harder on new content later in the week (hopefully!).

– I saw these gloves pinned on Pinterest and the comment below them cracks me up.  It seems like this is something that should be added to the Proverbs 31 woman list: She is chic without sacrificing technology.

– I had a friend ask me last week (without judgment she promised!) how many recipes on my Pinterest recipe board I had actually made.  So I decided to do some Pinterest board cleaning which resulted in three new boards, one of which is called “Recipes I’ve Made and Loved”.  If you’re in a rut, know that the recipes on this board had been made and enjoyed by our family.  I apologize to those whose feeds I blew up on Friday “organizing” my new boards.  Does anyone know of a secret way to reorganize boards without having things go through everyone else’s feeds??

– I try to not get political on here because, mostly, my favorite political activity at this stage in my life is playing ostrich and sticking my head in the sand to ignore everything.  But this health care stuff is for the birds.  If it weren’t so scary it would be funny at how inept every single person involved with this thing is.  And as a software developer, the fact that the website couldn’t be created fully working on time is something that should have surprised NO ONE!  If you don’t allow time for good testing everything’s going to fall apart!  If I learned one thing about producing software commercially in college it was this: You’ve got three options: Fast, Good, and Cheap.  You can only pick two at a time or your software will collapse.

– And in one other “heavy” subject, may I just say that the Common Core curriculum developed federally is ridiculous.  It is the sole reason why we are looking to keep our kids out of the public schools.  I would love to hear any positives that parents have had dealing with the curriculum because all I’ve heard are horror stories about worksheets where the questions are so ambiguous that the teachers can’t even answer them correctly without a key, a faulty grading rubric that gives a child with a 100 and a child with a 70 on a paper the same letter score, and ridiculous spelling homework like spending one night a week writing your spelling words backwards.  Not to mention the material that I’ve seen recommended and in the new textbooks that is very liberal and passes off some very questionable opinions on our government and history of our country as fact.  Any good stories from Common Core? I really would love to hear them so that they might temper some of my fears of a public school education for my kids right now.

– If you live out of the state of Alabama or don’t follow football recruiting you might have missed that the nation’s top defensive end committed to Alabama last week.  My favorite part in his whole story is how involved the Dean of Engineering, Chuck Karr, was in his recruitment.  In this Al.Com article Hand says, “On top of that, Dean Karr, the engineering dean, he’s a football guy. I love that guy. I love civil engineering and they have that major and a couple of players that actually play now are taking that major.”  Y’all, Dean Karr is awesome and while lots might not know it or want to acknowledge it, he plays a big part in recruiting the best and brightest for the University.  After spending the last three years on the Capstone Engineering Society board (the alumni group for the College of Engineering) I can say that Chuck is one of the best speakers that I have ever heard and he has done so much for The University.  If you ever have a question about the quality of students in Tuscaloosa, just go and find Chuck. He will be able to tell you exactly how many National Merit Finalists the College of Engineering has but will also be able to name at least five ENTIRE UNIVERSITY’s (that are very well renowned) where the entire university has less National Merit Finalists than the UA College of Engineering.

– Does anyone have a laundry fairy that could come and magically make the piles of laundry at my house disappear?  I could maybe pay in leftover Halloween candy??

– I think people are really surprised to hear that our tree’s are already up and decorated.  Someone else please tell me that they’ve already started decorating for Christmas?!?!

IMG_4025

– We’re leaving for Disney in less days than I want to count.  Anyone want to throw good advice our way?  Especially if you have ideas about how NOT to go crazy in the car with a 4.5 year old and a 2 year old for 10+ hours??!? But, seriously, places that we have to hit? Places to avoid? Any tips would be appreciated!

Ok, possibly the most random post ever.  If you’re still reading, God bless you and please go eat a piece of leftover Halloween candy for me because we all know you need it after sticking around through that! 🙂

#SHOPWISER: Shop to Support Women

Today, I’m linking up with one of my favorite author’s and blogs: Courtney DeFeo of Lil Light ‘O Mine.  If you’ve never heard of Courtney, you should definitely check out her story.  She is a Mom who is sold out for Christ and is working hard to encourage and help other Mom’s.  She’s got two little girls and a heart for Christ and she is such an example for me.  Her initial product, ABC Scripture Cards, were such a hit that she partnered with some other awesome ladies and great businesswomen to make them more widely available.  I’ve got a set and LOVE them!

This week Courtney has been doing a series called #SHOPWISER where she challenges her readers to shop with a purpose this Christmas season.  The days included shopping to give, to empower, to train hearts, and to connect.  Today is the last day of her series and it is “Shop to Support Women”.  On that note, I’d like to share a little about my business, Tales of a Peanut.

shopwiser-day-5

Tales of a Peanut was born out of my interest in creating unique, personalized birthday invitations and announcements for my kids and Christmas cards for our family.  It has since turned into creating a wide range of products that range from stationery, invitations, cards, placemats, plates, luggage tags, Bible verse art….and more.  I love working with someone to create something that represents them, their family, their interests, and their personality.  I have lots of “stock” designs and options in my shop, but my big passion is creating something personal for someone, even if it’s just altering colors or fonts of something that I have existing to make it more like their personality.  Here are some of my favorite products that would all make great Christmas (or anytime!) gifts.

Inspire Cards Set 1

The Inspire cards came as an idea of how to help support my cousin who is going on staff with Cru in Orlando.  Half of the proceeds go to support her mission with the writer’s team.  The set has five of my favorite Bible verses on them with blank insides so that you can write your own note.  Verses include Philippians 1:3, Joshua 1:9, Lamentations 3:23, 1 Corinthians 16:14, and Revelation 19:7a.

Hello Kitty

I started creating these 11″x17″ double sided, laminated placemats for my kids because I was getting tired of having to switch out their cloth placemats every day (sometimes with every meal!) because they were getting so dirty.  These are perfect to rinse off in the sink and my kids love to have some with their chosen designs and names on them.  I’ve also found that they make great gifts and have sold and given many of them for birthday and Christmas gifts.

Christmas Gift Tags Chevron Web

I like personalized things and not having to write our names on every gift tag that I put on a gift this year at Christmas is such a time saver that it almost makes me giddy.  So I created a few designs for 3″ circle stickers to use as gift tags.  I either center the names, leave them blank, or leave a space for the sticker to be personalized (like shown above).  I also have a friend who purchased these to stick on the required brown paper bag for her child’s snack at school each day.  Instead of writing her daughter’s name she just puts on a sticker and her daughter loves having ones in her favorite colors and designs.

Ruby

When my daughter turned one I created an invitation for her party, favor stickers, food labels, you name it.  And then I realized that I wanted something that she could keep out to remember the theme for her party.  So I ordered a 10″ melamine plate and have continued to do so on every birthday for my kids.  I now design and sell these 10″ melamine plates and have to say that my kids love remembering what their party was about when they eat off of a particular plate.  And now that I’ve added a few non-birthday ones to our collection there might be some fights over who gets which plate each night.  Virtually indestructible as long as you don’t put them in the microwave or use a sharp knife on them, I feel confident serving my kids on these plates because they’re BPA free and non-toxic.  They also make great gifts and any design in our shop can be made into a plate design.  The only catch about these is that they take 2-3 weeks to arrive so make sure and order by November 25th to avoid having to pay rush fees to get them in time for Christmas!

Gift Certificate FrontAnd if you’re overwhelmed by the choices in the shop or just can’t decide what your friend might like most, you can’t go wrong with a gift certificate.  Good on any item in our shop and available in $5 increments, we can send them to you to wrap and give or can wrap them and send them to your friend for you!

Thanks for your interest in my shop!  If you’re looking for other women-owned businesses check out this post for some of my favorites!

And make sure that you head back to Courtney’s site to check out the other women with businesses that are linking up in her #SHOPWISER series!

Meet Miss Ginna!

If you’ve been reading since the summer, you will have heard of Miss Ginna.  She teaches Charlotte’s art classes and is one of our favorite people.  She is so incredibly sweet and such a wonderful teacher — it’s amazing what kind of art our 4.5 year old is bringing home!  But not only that, she is very talented!  A few weeks ago (months?) I posted about five of my favorite artists.  But because of a a technology glitch I didn’t get to include any of Ginna’s work so I wanted to correct that now.

Ginna has been painting since college where she had a double major in art and advertising but didn’t start doing it “professionally” until she began teaching 16 years ago.  She initially was selling fun, whimsical children’s art wholesale to retailers through market in Atlanta.  As these pieces took off she began getting contacted by bedding manufacturers who would her fabrics for upcoming lines and ask her to create pieces to coordinate.  (I have to interject and say isn’t that so cool?!?!)  She also sold her work locally at a store that has since closed.

You can see some of the whimsical remnants of the art that she used to do in her unique floor cloths.  They are perfect for a beach house or just to add whimsy to your home!

Floor Cloth Fish Floor Cloth Houses Floor Cloth Flip Flops

When Ginna stopped selling at market, she concentrated on teaching, which she is wonderful at.  Now she paints gorgeous pieces of art in her spare time.  She says that she prefers oils but also does a lot of work in acrylics.  Look at these that she finished recently, they are stunning!

Ginna does lots of custom orders and you can email her (gsiniard (at) knology dot net) if you are interested in a piece.  Ginna has a goal in 2014 to concentrate on her abstracts and paint enough to have a home show to test the market for her work.  I know that I for one can’t wait for that!

Also, if you’re local and interested in getting your child enrolled in Ginna’s art classes registration for the spring semester is coming up in early December.  Email her to get added to her email list.  You will not regret time your child spends learning from Ginna!  Art and creativity are such an important part (in my opinion) in a child’s education and helping them learn to adapt to the world as they grow and Ginna’s classes are the perfect introduction.

Missing in Action

Well, I apologize for my long absence from the blog.  Not only is pregnancy keeping me down but I also got the stomach bug a few weeks ago which, on top of pregnancy, was even worse than I could have imagined.  In addition, my friend Jana and I hosted a Christmas Sip and shop for our shops (Little Lang’s and Tales of a Peanut) which turned out so well and has kept me busy filling orders between then and now!  But we have been having fun while I’ve been out of blog commission and I wanted to share with you some of what that has been!

IMG_3527

Charlotte is still drawing up a storm including this masterpiece of me with Percy in my tummy. (Percy is purple.  I’m a little afraid that Charlotte might have a coming apart if Percy is a boy like we hypothesize…)

IMG_3660

It finally turned into boot weather around here and when Charlotte and I broke out our cowboy boots James asked (ok, insisted) that we find Sissy’s old boots so that he could have some too.  They’re at least two sizes too big but he loves them so much!

IMG_3666

No pumpkin patch this year (I know, I feel awful but not awful enough to actually go) but the kids didn’t seem to mind going to Lowe’s to pick out pumpkins!  And hopefully they won’t remember that we didn’t go to the pumpkin patch this year until they read this blog in, like, twenty years and will hopefully be over it by then!

IMG_3678

Charlotte has had a slew of birthday parties and fun with her school friends recently.  It’s so much fun to see her with friends that she has made.  It’s also terrifying to watch them play and interact and wonder about what they’re saying and doing.  Being a Mom is not for wimps!

IMG_3716

Our fun neighbors have a ghost who “travels” around their yard every night to a new location.  Our kids have fallen in love with him and after we told them how much they loved him, the ghost magically appeared in OUR front yard!  The kids had so much fun playing outside “with” him one morning.  Right now their favorite phrase is “ahhhh! ghost!” although they both will tell you that ghost’s aren’t real so hopefully they won’t be too scarred.

After being the flower girl in Anna’s wedding Charlotte has been playing wedding all week.  This is her in her wedding dress wearing the tiara that I wore when Jason and I got married.  It’s so sweet to see her pretend to walk down the aisle and everything!

IMG_3732

Brother was her ring bearer and wanted something on his head since Sissy had a tiara, his Braves hat did well enough for him.

IMG_3748

And maybe in the biggest miracle of the month at our house, Charlotte woke up one morning and told us that she had stopped sucking her thumb!  As a reward she got to get her fingernails painted which she has been waiting for for such a long time!  We are so incredibly thankful that she did this by herself and in her own time.  Hopefully this will enable us to avoid a orthotic device next year like the dentist told us that we were looking at.  We’ll just hope for regular braces at the regular time. 🙂

IMG_3761This little guy is all about books these days and can sit for minutes flipping through them “reading” them to himself.  He has a varied taste between truck books and his sister’s books but I just love that he loves books.  He also greatly dislikes pictures and is smiling because he just started telling me “no pic-sure” at this point.  At least I got a mischievous grin!

Chicken Crescent Roll Up's Post Photo

It’s been a while since I’ve had a Recipe Wednesday post but I finally felt good enough to cook on Monday and loved the recipe that I came up with and wanted to share.  This was easy to throw together with just what I had on hand and every person in our family gobbled them up!

Note: I’m using a new recipe plugin, let me know if you have problems with it and I can post the recipe in another format! Thanks!
