Show Us Your Life – Favorite Charities/Non-Profits

I’m excited to join in this week’s Show Us Your Life about our favorite charities and non-profits.  I’ve got a number of groups that are dear to my heart, but there are three that I am especially passionate about and want to share with you!

Join the Compassion Blogger Network

The first is Compassion.  If you’ve followed the blog for long you’ve probably seen posts about Compassion and the things that they’re doing.  I was even more convinced that we need to be supporting Compassion when their Summer 2013 magazine came out with an article about a study conducted by a professor at the University of San Francisco and their findings that Compassion’s program makes a significant and positive difference in sponsored children’s lives.  The fact that the scientific community was able to verify that is amazing to me and I want everyone who can be involved, to get involved, to help these children across the world.

Whether it’s by sponsoring a child ($38/month), a one time gift, or just your prayers, you can help this organization.  Keep up with them on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, blog, YouTube, and Pinterest.  And you can get their magazine on your iPad for free whether you’re a sponsor or not!

Cru

The second organization that we love and support is Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ).  I attended Crusade while I was in college and loved the support and friends that I made in the organization.  I also attended their Christmas conference one year and was powerfully impacted.  Now, we’re involved with Cru through my cousin, Mary Leigh, who has just finished an internship year with Cru and is going on staff full time with them this fall.  Cru works domestically and internationally to connect people with Jesus Christ.

You can check out their giving page to see ways that you can give, or you can find a staff member and help support them.  Keep up with them on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and their RSS feed.  I haven’t blogged a lot about Cru in the past but hope to start featuring them more.

Miracle Bash

And the last organization that I’d like to let you know about is the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund at Huntsville Hospital Foundation.  This fund was started after two parents, Chris and Amy George, lost one of their daughters in 2005.  Melissa and Ann Catherine were born at 26 weeks and Melissa weighed one pound, nine ounces, and died just a few hours after she was born.  Ann Catherine weighed one pound, fifteen ounces, and was discharged from the NICU after 68 days.  She is now a full of life little girl and their family started this fund to remember Melissa and support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that cared for both Melissa and Ann Catherine after their births.

Over the past few years, I’ve been involved with the funds project called the Miracle Bash, but this year I had to pull back so that I could devote enough time to our family.  This fund is still near and dear to my heart though and all money raised goes to support the Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children.  This is the 8th annual event and so far over $1.4 million dollars has been raised to provide lifesaving equipment and technology for this Regional NICU that cares for more than 1,000 babies from across the Tennessee Valley each year.

You can support Melissa’s fund through various ways like a donation to the fund, attending the Miracle Bash, or support a swimming team that’s participating in Swim for Melissa.  Keep up with Melissa’s fund through Facebook.  Keep up with the Miracle Bash through Facebook and their blog.

Head back to Kelly’s Korner to see other’s favorite charities and non-profits.  And please remember that no matter how much or how little you can do, even your thoughts and prayers make a difference to those who are changed by these and other organizations.  No donation is too small and there are plenty of ways that you can be involved without spending a dime!  I would also love to hear about the organizations that are near and dear to your heart.  Leave me info in the comments so that I can check them out!

Books, Show Us Your Life

Show Us your Life – Book List

As you know, I love to read and I read a lot.  That being said I’ve read some great books lately and want to share.

She Walks in Beauty by Siri Mitchell
Period Christian fiction piece set in the late 1890’s about a young society woman in NYC.  Clara Carter is being introduced to society and isn’t sure that this life is the one that she wants.  This book pulls you right in to the drama and the time period and allows you to experience her first society season right along with Clara!

Candle in the Darkness by Lynn Austin
As a Southerner it’s hard reading a book about a spy for the North in the Civil War but when her reasons for doing so are so solid it’s easy to bypass that fact and enjoy the book.  I read this one on our trip to Colorado and was surprised at how it kept me engaged.

Leaving by Karen Kingsbury
I’ve been reading Karen Kingsbury since high school and have read pretty much everything that she’s published.  This is the first in the Bailey Flanigan series which is a continuation of sorts of three(?) other series that Karen has written around the Baxter family in Bloomington, Indiana.  But I think I’m going to like this series of the series the most because it focuses on Bailey’s journey to New York and her career on Broadway.

Leota’s Garden by Francine Rivers
Like Karen Kingsbury, I’ve been reading Francine Rivers for a long time.  I love everything of her’s that I’ve read but you do have to be a little careful searching for her books because she wrote at the beginning of her career in the non-Christian sector so if you’re looking for Christian fiction make sure the book you’re looking to buy is published by a Christian publisher (I think her’s is Tyndale House).  This book is old and I read it in college but recently found it for free on my Kindle and I was pulled in again to this lovely story about a college aged woman and her reconnection with her grandmother.

I got some gift certificates to book stores for my birthday so I can’t wait to see what books everyone else recommends so that I can make out a new reading list for myself! Check out Kelly’s Show us Your Life post for more reading suggestions!  Or check out my booklist page for lots of other reviews.

*These are all my actual recommendations and I wasn’t asked to review any of these books.  I either bought these books for myself or they were free for a period of time on Amazon’s site for the Kindle.

Show Us Your Life – Show Us Your Alma Mater

I wanted to chime in on Kelly’s Show Us Your Life this week — show us your Alma Mater!

If you’ve been reading my blog for any time at all (especially in the fall!) you know that we are big fans of The University of Alabama.  My parents attended The University, Jason and I both did, my brother did, as well as six of my aunts and uncles, and I currently have six cousins in school there also!  As you can see, we definitely bleed Crimson and White!

Even though in high school I spent a few months exploring my other collegiate options I ultimately stayed with my roots and chose to spend my four years from 2002 to 2006 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  Everywhere else I applied was pretty far away (I definitely didn’t apply to that other school!) and I got some great scholarships in Tuscaloosa and Alabama had just been part of my life from the time I was born.  I mean, my Dad taught me the fight song when I was three, where else would I go?!?!

My four years in Tuscaloosa were full.  I was a member of my sorority (Alpha Chi Omega), on the Panhellenic Executive Board (VP Judicial — the least fun job there is!), in honor societies and professional groups, and participated in some off campus experiences like interning in the US Senate and interning at a company in my field.  I made some good friends, but, interestingly enough the people that I’m still with now I met while I was in school but wasn’t close friends with then.  I’m glad that I’m friends with the ones that I am now — they’re the best!

And for some laughs….here are some of my favorite pictures from my college days.

Obviously, my Bid Day. September 2002.

Decades Party. September 2002.
First date party!

Homecoming dance competition.  We got robbed! 🙂

Bid Day, August 2003.

MCGA conference with Panhellenic, Chicago, February 2005.

Being tapped into The XXXI, April 2005.

Senior Bid Day, August 2005.

Alpha Chi/ATO Swap with my little brother! September 2005.

My candlelight, September 2005.
Seniors at our last Formal, November 2005.
Trip to Google for a conference, January 2006.

Flowers for being an Alumni Association Outstanding Senior, March 2005.

Tapping Lindsey into The XXXI, April 2006.
Senior Pledge class pictures, May 2006.

Graduation! May 2006
We are working hard to continue the Alabama tradition with Charlotte by teaching her “Roll Tide” at a super early age and taking her to tons of games — including the 2009 National Championship game!  We’re hoping that she enjoys four years in Tuscaloosa just like we did!

Show Us Your Life – Favorite Bible Verses

There are any number of Bible verses that I love.  But there are two that I have loved for a long, long time.  These have been my two favorite verses since high school:

The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.
– Zephaniah 3:17
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.
Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord
your God will be with you wherever you go.
– Joshua 1:9
Both of these verses have a similar message.  God is with us.  God will not leave.  God will save you.  Don’t worry.  You are worthy.  You are special.  God cares for you.
I think these things are important and things that we could all do to remember on a daily basis.  God rejoices over me and over you with singing.  What could be greater than that?
Recently, I’ve come to love another verse and it’s helped me a lot through the last few weeks that have been kind of stressful.  I love the message in this verse also:
You are my refuge and my shield;
I have put my hope in your word.
– Psalm 119:114

Show Us Your Life – China Patterns

I loved registering for china with Jason when we got married.  Trying to foresee the future and decide on what we would want and need was fun.  We decided on an array of china and I loved that!

Our formal china is Vera Wang’s Grosgrain pattern.  It’s just beautiful and, I believe, timeless.  I have really enjoyed using it over the past few years.  It displays very nicely on a set table.
Our everyday china is a combination of Vietri patterns.  My favorite was the La Fenice pattern but Jason felt (and I agreed) that the dinner AND the salad plates in La Fenice might be a little much.  So we decided to go with the basic red Rosso Vecchio plates and mugs and accent them with the La Fenice salad plates and bowls.  We have serving pieces in both patterns.  I am still super happy with this selection although we have been talking about picking up an inexpensive set of dishes from Target or somewhere to use every day because every day use does take a toll on Vietri dinnerware.  Vietri dinnerware also chips easily if you aren’t super careful and so a few of our pieces have chips already.  But I love the presentation on the dishes and am so glad that we picked them!

Rosso Vecchio
La Fenice
We also chose a holiday pattern that coordinated with the Rosso Vecchio plates.  That way the only holiday china that would be required would be salad plates, accents, and mugs.  I love our Christmas china and we love using it.  Unfortunately, it has since been discontinued so if we see any pieces online we also snatch them up.  We will probably get a formal Christmas pattern at some point but right now we don’t have one.  I love that there are both red and green pieces and so they are so festive when we display them!

I can’t wait to see everyone else’s china.  Hop back to Kelly’s Korner to continue surfing the blog hop.

Show Us Your Life – Favorite Children’s Books

I love children’s books.  I have always been an avid reader and I hope to pass my love of books down to Charlotte.  Here are some of my all-time favorites from when I was growing up and some of my new favorites that Charlotte has introduced me to.  I can’t wait to get ideas about great books from others during Kelly’s tour today!

The Napping House by Don and Audrey Wood
Really, anything by Don and Audrey Wood is fantastic.  They have great books with great illustrations.  I got to meet them once at a Young Author’s Conference and so some of my books are signed.  I can tell you that as a child I loved having books signed by the authors!
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury

Twinkle Toes by Karen Katz
Charlotte loves this touch and feel book but she also loves Karen Katz’s other books like Princess Baby.  The bright colors and cute little girls make these books easily relate-able and the catchy stories are easy to read.
These are some of Charlotte’s absolute favorite books. I can’t wait to read about other must reads!

Make sure you enter for my Gussy giveaway which ends TOMORROW (Sat, 5/15) and my Must Read giveaway which ends Wednesday, 5/19.  Check out my giveaways page for a listing of all giveaways in the month of May in honor of Charlotte’s first birthday!
