Last Minute Gifts for Mom

In case you’ve forgotten, Mother’s Day is Sunday. And it would be a really, really good idea to get your Mom something special this year. After all, she did sacrifice her body for you not to mention basically all of her energy and free time while you were growing up. Grin. So, in case you haven’t gotten her something yet, here are a few gifts that you can still have ready to go for Sunday! Some of these links are affiliate links and you can read all about my policies for those on my link/review disclosure page.

Women Are Scary by Melanie Dale

Women are Scary - Melanie Dale - Last Minute Mothers Day Gifts - Tales of a Peanut

I am trying to wait patiently to read this book until I save up some “pin money” but I’ve heard wonderful things about it. And most any Mom can tell you that making Mom friends is hard! You can get it from Amazon and have it sent right to her and print her out the copy of the cover to give her on Sunday.

Monogrammed Floppy Hat

Monogrammed Floppy Hat - Mint Julep Monograms - Last Minute Mothers Day Gifts - Tales of a Peanut

I can almost guarantee you that there’s someplace in your town that sells a monogrammed floppy hat like this. (If you’re local to me, check out Mint Julep Monograms.) They might not be able to get it monogrammed for you in time for Sunday but you can purchase it and give it to her and let her know that you wanted to let her pick out her font and thread colors but you’ve already paid for the monogram at the shop.

You will probably be headed to Target (or some other store) between now and Sunday, so why don’t you pick up a package of cardstock and print out a beautiful printable or two for your Mom? You can even grab a frame and have it framed for her! Here are some of my favorites.

Or a gift card so that she can shop for herself is never a bad idea! And these days you can get gift cards to pretty much anywhere! Some of my favorite places to receive gift cards to are Chloe + Isabel, Joss and Main, Amazon, and Dunkin Donuts. Any of her favorite local haunts would be great choices for gift cards as well — just make sure you’re giving something that she would want and use, not something that you want her to use or that she’ll end up using for the family!

Filled.Life Subscription

And my last idea is one that keeps on giving. Give her a subscription to filled.life! This is a monthly subscription crate that is filled with products to help you grow in your relationship with Christ and help you  minister to others. It sounds amazing and it’s definitely on my Mother’s Day wish list!

If you’ve already purchased your Mother’s Day gifts, let me know what you got! And, if you haven’t, I’d love to know what you’re about to run out and get to honor your Mom! They do so much for us, let’s show them how much we care this year.

Mentor Mondays – Hilary Russell – Cotton Table Ceramics

Mentor Monday Tales of a Peanut

Today I’m starting a new series entitled Mentor Mondays. I will be sharing interviews with some of my mentors and those I look up to on the blog so that we can all learn from them. This series will mostly focus on the business sector but may occasionally branch into the personal. Enjoy this inaugural post in this series!

Cotton Table Ceramics - Mentor Monday on Tales of a Peanut

Let me introduce you to my friend Hilary. She is an amazing Mama and businesswoman who has taken her gift of art to a whole new level. She started a local gift shop in 2009 called H. Raines and began custom painting ceramic pieces for people who wanted tableware that showcased their hometowns, their families, and their states. Before long she was making a name for herself but was also in the throes of new motherhood and found the store and her art too much to handle (as anyone would!). So she sold her shop to focus on being a Mama and continued development of her custom ceramics line from home. These days you can find her chasing after her two boys, Fenn and Cam, hanging out with her husband, Victor, or working away on orders. Today I wanted to pick her brain on balancing work and family and what her secrets to success were.

Cotton Table Ceramics - Mentor Monday on Tales of a Peanut

I know selling your store must have been bittersweet, can you tell me a little about how you made the decision to move on from it and knew that it was the right move for you and your family?

Selling the store was a difficult decision.  I loved it.  It gave me a creative and personal outlet while allowing me to juggle motherhood.  I had an 11 month old at the time and was 6 months pregnant with our second baby!  Yikes!  My ceramics business was growing rapidly and I had to give on something.  The ceramics I could grow from home and give motherhood my full-time attention….babies 15 months apart is no joke!  So I sold the store and as much as letting go of the gift shop side of things saddened me, it was leaving all the absolutely incredible ladies behind who shared in that venture with me that was the hardest.

So tell me, when did you first start painting ceramics?

I started painting ceramics out of the shop because I noticed a need from my customers, looking for local art work that represented our beautiful landmarks.

How did you settle on painting ceramics and what’s special about the pieces that you paint on?

I chose to paint on predominately Italian made bisque, mainly because the bisque ware is incredibly sturdy and durable, but also because each piece is slightly different.   They all have character that sets them apart from one another.  I love that about handmade!

With two small boys and a growing business you have to be incredibly busy. How do you balance your family life and your business?

Balancing work life with family life can be really difficult with a 1 and 2-year-old.  They both go to mothers morning out so I do have some time a couple of days a week to tackle my work.  I’ve also had to get pretty good at telling retailers who order from me that I’m a one woman show and it may be a few weeks before the product gets to them.  That was really hard!  It’s not pleasant to disappoint people and I’m a people pleaser for sure!

What two things must you have in order to have a productive day?

Most definitely I need Jesus and a spirit of oneness with my husband first thing in the morning.  We are called to be one flesh, so when we’re not on the same page or one of us wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, it makes it difficult to be focused and productive.  We both try to encourage one another so we can make the very most of the hours ahead, whether it’s work or tackling two sick kids!

What’s your dream for Cotton Table Ceramics in, say, two years?

I would love to have an Italian manufacturer producing my ceramics line one day!  This would be something I would tackle once the boys are in school so my time is a little less restricted.  But that has always been my dream and goal.

That’s an amazing goal and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see it happen as your work is amazing! You can connect with Hilary on a variety of platforms including her websiteFacebook, Pinterest, and Instagram

Celebrating Pomp and Circumstance | Gifts for High School Graduates

Gifts for High School Graduations - Tales of a Peanut

Our beloved babysitter is graduating high school this year and headed to college. Don’t ask me what we’re going to do about babysitting in the fall because I have no idea and might have a panic attack, but I realized yesterday that I haven’t thought about graduation gifts yet. Since I thought you might be in a panic thinking about gifts that are fun, useful, helpful, and that an 18 year old will actually appreciate it, I thought I’d share my finds with you.

25CollegeDormRoomMustHaves Kaitlyn Bouchillon

Kaitlyn Bouchillon has a list of 25 college dorm room must have’s on her blog. Even though I think her list is more applicable for the graduate to cull through I especially liked her suggestions of a tool kit, extra earbuds, and a waterproof outdoor blanket.

40-Graduation-Gift-Ideas-HowDoesShe

HowDoesShe shared 40 graduation gifts idea that lean more towards the sentimental and for parents to give their children (I think).  Some ideas that I liked a lot from their list included gift cards to the movies, a college themed basket with items from their new school, and postcards stamped and addressed to you to send back to redeem for homemade cookies. I wish someone had thought of that when I went off to school!

Brit+Co 27 Last Minute College Graduation Gifts

Bri+Co wrote a post about college graduation gifts but with the exception of the alcohol related ones a lot apply to high school graduations as well. I particularly liked the Naturebox subscription, a Sunny Life Beach Radio, a book called “Adulting” which I feel like I should look in to, and the Chamomile Skin Rescue Facial Kit.

Camelbak of Quarters

Another idea that I saw on Pinterest and loved was giving them a Camelbak full of quarters. Apparently one of those bottles can hold $102 in quarters! The bottle is something that they’ll use and I know that I feel like when I pay for things (like drive through lunches) with quarters it feels like I’m paying with pretend money because it’s not bills. Quarters could also come in handy for vending machines, laundry, etc.

I also think that some of the following products might be unique enough that they won’t receive multiples and will enjoy them.

Jeremiah 29-11 Art

Scripture Art from Lily and Val

Monogrammed Minky Blanket

Monogrammed Minky Blanket from HeartString Things

Athens Georgia Art

I love these unique prints of cities from Bugsy and Sprite! If they have one of the city where the graduate is attending college this would be a great addition to their college decor.

And, finally, because I love my products and think they make great gifts also, here are some great ideas from my shop.

Classically Cool Notecards Tales of a Peanut

Darby Plate Tales of a Peanut

So tell me, if you’re a graduate, what would you like to receive? And if you’re giving a gift, what is it?? I’d love some additional ideas while I decide what to give!
