Throw Back Thursday

3-01 Collosseum

There were teachers in my high school who planned a trip to Europe for students every year.  It wasn’t associated with the school or any group and was just a trip that we could sign up for.  My Junior year the trip was to Italy and most of my friends and I signed up for the trip.  We traveled during spring break (March 2001) and hit all the high points of Italy like Venice, Rome, Florence, Capri, Pompeii, etc.  It was an amazing trip and I still have wonderful memories of it.  Here we were at the Coliseum!

And, just in case Rachel happens to read my blog, Happy Birthday! She’s the one on the far right and today is her birthday!

Aug 2003 Bid Day SC, MBC, LF

Bid Day 2003.  This was my first year in the house during rush (as it was still called then) and I’m pretty sure none of us looked as tired as we actually were (ahh, the beauty of youth).  Bid Day in Tuscaloosa is always the hottest day of the year and this year was no exception.  I got really hot at the Texas A&M game last fall in Texas but I still don’t think it compares to Bid Day’s of years past.

Things I remember for rush that year: getting bit on my back by a spider that must have been hiding in my skit costume and feeling like I was going to die during voting that night; having a girl I love get dropped (it happens to everyone at some point during their years in the house); being so worried about make sure I remembered girls names and did everything right for them when they were in the house; and also getting to spend so much time with my pledge sisters and having a lot of fun even though we were all tired of being cooped up in the house.

Rush/Recruitment is a beast all of it’s own.  This was the only year that I was in the house during rush because I joined the Panhellenic Executive Board the next year.  And while all my memories aren’t fond of that time, a lot of them are and I’m still so proud to be an Alpha Chi Omega!

Friends For Life

Way back in 2008, I shared about my Mom’s Birthday Club and the Christmas party that they had that year.  I don’t think we’ve been able to make a gathering since then so we were excited that were were going to be able to join in the fun this year.  The party was at the roller skating rink in my hometown and Charlotte was very excited about going to a place called the “Skate Castle”.  I’m not sure that it lived up to her expectations since in the past month she had seen Cinderella’s castle, but she still thought it was neat.

Charlotte tried to skate but got frustrated very quickly.  James was a big fan of the roller racer’s after Memma took him around on her lap for a while.  And after seeing James enjoying it Charlotte was quick to join in the fun!  They have also added a blow up area and a big play area that Charlotte enjoyed.

I most enjoyed seeing the people that I’ve known for my whole life and their families.  It’s hard to believe that eight couples started this group but they did!  I don’t even know how many “kids” there are now but I know that this picture is missing a lot of them and there are two unborn babies in that picture too!

When I edited my pictures I thought I’d see what pictures I had on the computer from prior Birthday Club events.

And you know those friends that you’ve known your whole life?  These two definitely make that cut.  I spent lots of time growing up with Catherine and Carolyn and am loving getting to see their beautiful girls grow up.  It was fun to get to see them again!

Charlotte, Family, Friends, Holidays

Happy Halloween!

We’ve been talking about Halloween since we found out in April that we were having a boy.  Honestly, probably before that because I’ve known all year that Charlotte should be Minnie and she heartily agreed. When we found out that James was on his way I decided that we’d have a Minnie and a Pluto and ordered the costumes.  We’ve been talking about it since then and Charlotte was so excited!
Then James arrived at a tiny 6 pounds and I knew that the the large 0-6 month costume that I had for him wasn’t going to work.  So I moved on to plan B and the Mickey onesie I had purchased for James because I knew Charlotte would like it.  So the plan then was Minnie and Mickey and we talked about it for a while and Charlotte was excited.
Halloween came and I fed James and got him dressed and then set about to put on Charlotte’s Minnie costume.  She hadn’t tried it on but had been looking at it for days and was so excited.  But when I started to put it on I found that the arm holes were too small and tight on her arms.  I took it off and modified it so that her arms would fit with no problems but when I went to put it back on her she resisted.  I couldn’t get her Minnie costume on at all!
For a few minutes she was refusing her Minnie costume or any other options that I suggested.  Ballerina, Fairy Princess Ballerina, Angel Ballerina, until I finally suggested cheerleader.  She latched on to that suggestion and wouldn’t let go.  Trying to hold out I told her that we would get dressed later, hoping I could convince her to put her Minnie dress on after I got James down.  I went ahead with my pictures of the two of them with James dressed and Charlotte not.  Even though they’re not Minnie and Mickey, they’re still cute!

My Little Mickey

After Jason got home from work we took Charlotte Trick or Treating.  Since it was pretty cold in our neck of the woods and was James’ nap time he didn’t get to make the trip.  Next year we’ll trick or treat as a family of four!

Charlotte had a lot of fun Trick or Treating.  For a little while that afternoon she had said that she didn’t want to go but she got over that and had fun.  It was chilly but she loved getting candy!  She especially loved the glow necklace that she got from Mrs Nancy!

A trip to Tuscaloosa

Back in the winter Kelly and I planned to attend the Kenny Chesney concert in Tuscaloosa.  It was originally scheduled for the end of March but was then rescheduled for the end of May.  Even after they decided to move she said that she’d meet me in town for the concert so we kept looking forward to it.  It eventually happened that the concert was going to be the night before they were supposed to close on their house here but Kelly still said that she was going to meet me.

After the tornado’s Jason decided that it might be better if he and Charlotte came down with me instead of me coming down by myself.  Pretty much no one in my family was happy about me seeing the devastation when I was by myself and I was totally on board with that opinion so we decided that they would come with me.  So after Charlotte’s doctor’s appointment we headed down to Tuscaloosa.

We entered the city through Alberta City, turned onto McFarland and took it until Hackberry, and then drove Hackberry into campus.  I have never seen anything as horrific as the damage and devastation.  It was heart breaking and gut wrenching and I’m so thankful that I wasn’t by myself when I saw it.  I can’t even explain how bad everything looked.  I was overcome on a lot of the drive through but by the time we got to the 15th street intersection I had calmed down enough to snap these two pictures.  If you aren’t familiar with town they won’t mean much and they really don’t show much devastation at all but I do want to remember them so I’m going to post them.

Looking towards campus from McFarland.  This is towards 15th from where Krispy Kreme was.

This is looking back up 15th from McFarland.

After driving through the area we headed to the condo and got Charlotte set up for her nap.  Then I got ready to do some shopping for James!  Kelly met me a store into my shopping afternoon and we searched for James and Catherine (Kelly’s soon-to-be new baby girl).  We found a lot of cute things and enjoyed our shopping time together.

We got back to the condo and played with Charlotte for a little bit and then headed to dinner at De Palma’s and the concert.  It was very nice to get to have one last girls night before Kelly moves.  We will definitely miss them a lot and even though we’re going to try and see each other often when we see each other it won’t be the same so the timing of our big night out as their literal last night before they moved back to Mississippi was very nice!

While we were at the concert Jason had taken Charlotte to dinner at Moe’s and then they walked down to Denny Chimes.  She had learned to name Denny Chimes in one of her Alabama books the week before and so Jason said that she was so excited to see it in person!  She is still talking about how she saw Denny Chimes and how it’s a clock and it says “Ding, ding!”

Kelly and I got to our seats for the concert and were very impressed with the new amphitheater.  It opened this spring and is really nice and a great facility.  We weren’t super impressed with Uncle Kracker’s opening show but once Kenny took the stage the concert was great!  He puts on a great show (this was my 5th to see of his — I want to detail those later!) and this one was no exception.  It was really hot but that didn’t stop us from enjoying ourselves!  He did a good job of mixing old songs with new ones and it was really fun.

One of my highlights for the show was near the end when he talked about the Saban’s picking him up and taking him to their house for lunch that day and talking about everything that’s happened in Tuscaloosa.  He talked about how much he liked Nick and Terry and how nice they were and how much they love Tuscaloosa (big words coming from a Tennessee fan!).  And then he sang “My Home’s in Alabama” which was so special!

We did have a big trek back up a hill to get to our car that was almost more than these two pregnant momma’s could handle but we made it and joined Jason and Tripp back at the condo for one last evening of conversation.  It was a very emotional trip from the viewing of the tornado destruction to leaving and not knowing when we were going to see Kelly and Tripp again, but that sort of just made it more memorable and special.  Thanks Kelly for joining me for such a fun night!

Around the Wheel

We got home early from Colorado and so we got to spend some time with Charlotte.  She wanted to go on a walk and so we set out for what was supposed to be a short walk.  But whenever we tried to get her to go  home she started yelling, “More walk! More walk!”  We eventually saw Dr. Mike, Matthew, and Megan on the course playing in their plastic ball.  The kids were inside the middle of this big, plastic ball that looked like a mouse wheel but for kids!  Dr. Mike was pushing them (inside the ball) down a small hill!  Charlotte was intrigued so we headed over to check it out.

Charlotte was enthralled with the ball and was soon playing along with the big kids.  Even though she wasn’t brave enough to get in it (and, truthfully, her Mommy didn’t want her to!) she enjoyed pushing it down the fairway!
