Disney With Toddlers – Hollywood Studios and Epcot

Disney With Toddlers

We started off our first full day at Disney World by heading to Hollywood Studios in the morning.  We didn’t rush to get an early start and ended up at the buses at our hotel around 9:15 am.  There were some bus issues that morning but only to Hollywood Studios.  Maybe the bus system had heard that Hollywood Studios was supposed to be the least crowded that day just like we did and so didn’t think they’d need the buses?  I’m not sure but eventually they got there and we got to Hollywood Studios.

Hollywood Studios

We knew that there wasn’t a ton for us to do at Hollywood Studios and so only planned to spend the morning there.  We had pre-scheduled our Fast Passes with the new FastPass+ system on our Mickey Bands and so headed straight to the Animation Courtyard for our first Fast Pass  event…Disney Junior Live on Stage!

Hollywood Studios 2

We got a picture of the kids with a big picture of Mickey before we went in.  Jake and Sophia were both signing autographs outside of the theater but the lines were too long to stand in and still make our Fast Pass time so we skipped seeing them.  Plus, our kids don’t watch either of their shows so it wasn’t a top priority for us.

Hollywood Studios 4

I had read that you didn’t want to be right at the front for this show so I made sure to sit behind people.  We probably should have waited a little longer to get in the Fast Pass line though because we were still pretty close to the front.  So, word of advice, don’t be the first people in the Fast Pass line for Disney Junior Live on Stage.  I wasn’t sure what the show was going to be like but was not expecting a real hostess as well as puppets from the stage.  It soon made sense why you didn’t want to be on the front row because the puppets aren’t particularly tall so in order to see them well you need to be back a little ways.

Hollywood Studios 5

Hollywood Studios 6

Hollywood Studios 7

I’m guessing the story changes based on the popular shows on Disney Junior but we got to see the Mickey characters, the characters from Doc McStuffins, as well as the characters from Sophia the First and Jake and the Neverland Pirates.  The kids were up dancing during some of it and had a great time.  It was the perfect way to kick off our morning!

Before we left for Disney my Mom had brought over some old photo albums from our family trips to Disney World.  Charlotte decided that she really wanted to go to the “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” playground after she saw a picture of my brother and I at the playground.  So we headed there after the Disney  Junior show since our Voyage of the Little Mermaid Fast Passes weren’t until after lunch.

Hollywood Studios 8

Hollywood Studios 9

They have greatly reduced the area of the playground to make way for other attractions but it was still a fun place to burn off some energy.  Charlotte loved going down the big leaf slide but neither of the kids would pose on the giant ant to recreate the picture of Charlie and me.  I think the enclosed area and lots of kids was a little overwhelming for James also so he was ready to leave pretty quickly.  I was beginning to get hungry and figured everyone would feel better after eating so we started walking around to find a place to eat lunch.

We settled on the ABC Commissary for lunch and were pleasantly surprised at the food.  We went a little early (around 11:30) and so beat the lunch crowd.  By the time we left it was packed.  I didn’t love that they had tv’s playing scenes from ABC shows everywhere — my kids don’t get to see much of anything on ABC other than football — but I don’t think they really paid attention to any of that.  Mostly they were excited about the giant cupcake that was waiting for them after they finished their lunches!

Hollywood Studios 11

We then headed back to the Animation Courtyard for The Voyage of the Little Mermaid.  We weren’t sure about having both of them sit through the show since they can’t sit through the movie due to the scary part, but Charlotte was determined to see it and we had a long talk about how it was not real.

Hollywood Studios 3

Hollywood Studios 12

The show was so impressive with rain drops falling down on us, great visual effects, and a real Ariel who was a mermaid then became a princess!  Charlotte closed her eyes through all the Ursula parts (which are very violent, just like the movie) but she was fine hearing it and not seeing it.  James just watched the whole thing in amazement.  We were near the beginning of the Fast Pass line and sat around row 7 or 8.  Since we were first in we had to go all the way to the left hand side of the stage but we could still see everything perfectly.  The kids did sit on our laps so that they could see.

Hollywood Studios 13

After the Voyage of the Little Mermaid, we set out to find a happy for Charlotte and James.  She had spotted a Pluto with jingle bells earlier in the day and we promised her that she could get it before we left.  They each ended up with a new Christmas themed Disney baby and we headed back to the hotel to have a little rest time.

Epcot

After a little rest (and by rest I mean time spent on the balcony watching the animals) it was time to head back out to Epcot.  Our bus transportation to Epcot went much smoother than the morning had and it was a very quick ride to Epcot.  Jason and I grabbed our only “parent” picture of the trip while we waited on the bus.

Epcot 11

Epcot 12

The beauty of Park Hopper passes means that you can go to multiple parks on a single day, but the new FastPass+ system only allows you to get three fast passes for a single park per day.  Because of this we didn’t have any Fast Passes at Epcot and weren’t sure where to spend our time.  We had dinner reservations for later on that night but no real plan when we entered the park.  After checking the character times we found that the characters that are exclusively at Epcot (specifically Mulan) weren’t going to be out when we were there.  So we decided to head to The Seas with Nemo to see how long its wait was going to be.  We ended up basically walking straight onto the Nemo ride, but be prepared that the walk even with no wait is dark and twisty and long before you actually get to the ride!

The kids loved the ride and loved the huge aquariums once we got off the ride even better.  They loved seeing real turtles (at that time James’ favorite animal was a turtle so he was over the moon) and got to see some big manatees swimming.  We didn’t go into Turtle Talk with Crush but have heard great things about it!

After The Seas we meandered through the park munching on some snacks.  Popcorn was the kids favorite throughout the trip and would last a really long time.  We would ask for a second empty container and split it between the kids — it was perfect!  I was wanting a pretzel but settled for a Nutella crepe in France.  It wasn’t as good as those in front of the Orsay in Paris but was pretty close!

We saw Mary Poppins as we walked through England but she was about to go on break so we went ahead to France.  We happened into line for Princess Aurora and that was when the kids evening started turning magical.

Epcot 1

Epcot 3

Epcot 2

While James would have nothing to do with the characters in full costume, he had no problem snuggling up to all of the princesses!  Father Christmas was also doing his talk on Christmas in France next to the line for Aurora so we got to listen to that while we waited.  After meeting Aurora we scouted out Belle’s location (she was currently on break) and got in line to meet my favorite Princess.

Epcot 4

I had heard that the Belle in France was one of the nicest characters in all of the theme parks and she didn’t disappoint.  She encouraged the kids to read and asked them what their favorite books were.  She was so kind and genuine and I kind of wish that I had gotten a picture with her!

We left Belle and ran back to England hoping to get into the Mary Poppins line before it closed.  We made it and got to listen to a band playing some classic English rock in the England amphitheater while we waited.

Epcot 5

Mary Poppins told Charlotte and James that they had proper English names and was very sweet to them.  As we strolled away from Mary Poppins James said, “Mary Poppins nice….Mary Poppins cute!”  I think for the rest of the trip he wanted to go back to see Mary Poppins!

We didn’t make the Candlelight Vigil that is held in America at Epcot which I was disappointed about.  If you go at Christmas you should definitely schedule your meals so that you can get priority seating for the Vigil because it is amazing with a celebrity reader reading the Christmas story every night and a choir singing hymns.  We did manage to walk up as Neil Patrick Harris was finishing up one of the Vigil’s though (there are three each night) and got to hear the end of the show.  Even from a distance it was wonderful and so moving to hear so many people celebrating Christ’s birth.

We continued through the countries until we got to Norway where we were headed for a very special dinner with the princesses.  Our reservations were at 6:45 (way too late!) and it was dark by the time we reached Norway.  It was also very crowded with long lines to see the sisters from “Frozen”.  There was confusion with the staff at Akershus about when we could get in line for dinner based on when we had reservations also.  Basically, it was my least favorite time of the whole trip.  We did eventually make it in for dinner though and watching Charlotte’s face light up as she met the princesses made it all worth it.

Epcot 6 Askerhus

Epcot 7 Askerhus

After Cinderella came to the table, it was time for the parade of Princes and Princesses.  All the kids went up to the closest princess and then they paraded around the restaurant.  It was pretty neat and I think Charlotte and James enjoyed it even if they didn’t really know what they were doing.

Charlotte was being pretty patient waiting for her favorite princess but once Ariel got closer to our table she was basically bouncing up and down in her chair waiting for her.  And then, the moment that Charlotte had been waiting for for six months arrived and she got to meet Ariel!

Epcot 8 Askerhus

Epcot 9 Askerhus

There were other princesses that came by after Ariel, but it was all kind of downhill after her.  The kids were tired, we were exhausted, and Charlotte’s dreams had been fulfilled.  They did enjoy seeing Snow White (although her voice was one I had to adjust to) and we saw Aurora again.

Epcot 10 Askerhus

As we left dinner we enjoyed walking back through the World Showcase to the front of the park.  Everything was decorated for Christmas and even though it was pitch black and there aren’t too many lights, it was still enjoyable to walk in the cool night air.  We headed back to the hotel for another good night of sleep!

Disney With Toddlers – Traveling and Chef Mickey’s

Disney With Toddlers

Now that I’ve wrapped up Christmas, I hope you are ready to hear A LOT about our trip to Disney World.  I literally have posts ready to go for the next three (!) weeks with all of our details.  And if you wonder how I can stretch it out that long, let me tell you that I had over 10 pages of typed notes for our trip before we left so my engineer self went into overdrive with this trip and I want to share anything that might help you.  I’ll be covering everything from what we did to book and what we learned to the tips that we found for all of the parks and things that we found online that didn’t apply to us but I thought might help you.

I’m going to start off with a chronological look at our trip including more personal stuff like what we did, what the kids liked, etc.  And I’ll get to more of the nitty-gritty details after I cover our trip in particular.  I’m also going to be adding a page for Disney that I’ll had to the header once I get finished with all my posts so that it will be an easy reference for the future.

So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

*********************************

We chose to drive to Orlando because flights were very expensive and we just couldn’t pull the trigger on the added expense.  So we woke the kids up at 4am on Sunday, December 1, and put them in the car in their jammies.  We were hoping and praying that they would fall right back to sleep but, unfortunately, they didn’t.  James slept maybe a total of 2 hours during the entire ride down, which ended up being a good 12 hour drive due to traffic.  And Charlotte didn’t close her eyes for a second!  But the miracle of it all was that they were fantastic during the whole ride.

Maybe it was because they had known about our trip since we started planning it back in April and so were excited but weren’t too excited.  Or maybe….I really don’t know what it was, but I had plenty of activities for them and along with watching a little bit of Mickey, Doc McStuffins, and Mary Poppins they were great travel companions.

Car 2

James is checking out some stick puppets that I made for him.

Car 3

Charlotte’s making up stories with her princess stick puppets.

Car 4

And maybe the biggest lifesaver was that I had recorded the stories to four read-aloud story books before we left.  They could look through those books and have them read to them while we were in the car without us having to do the reading in the car — perfect!

While the kids were great in the car, this pregnant Mama, got very antsy when we were literally stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic just north of Orlando for an hour and a half.  Thank you Lord for the technology in iPhones and the Google Maps app that will show you traffic because we got off the interstate and went the back ways a little bit in order to get to Disney in time.

In time for what you ask?  We had reservations at Chef Mickey’s for dinner on Sunday night!  Not the best planning on our part considering that we had such a long drive, but, since we made it with a little time to spare, we call it a great decision in hindsight because it let the kids get introduced to everything in a smaller dose before we hit a park.

Chef Mickeys 5

We had heard GREAT things about Chef Mickey’s and were excited to get there.  Our kids have loved watching the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Disney Junior for years so I knew that they would want to get an up close and personal look at all the characters and I’d heard that Chef Mickey’s was a great place to do it without having to stand in line.  I would highly recommend a meal here because even with the lesser park crowds when we were there, there was ALWAYS a huge line around the Clubhouse characters in the parks.

Chef Mickeys 1

We chose to drive from our hotel (Animal Kingdom Jambo House) to the Contemporary Resort where Chef Mickey’s is located.  We were told at our hotel that by valeting at one resort, you are able to valet at all Disney resorts without paying an extra fee (you do need to tip each time though).  Because of this we were able to simply drive to the Contemporary and drive right up to the door with very little traffic or wait time!  Had we not driven ourselves to the Contemporary, I believe that we would have had to have taken the bus to the Magic Kingdom and then ridden the Monorail to the Contemporary.  Since we hadn’t done Disney transportation yet and heard to allow 45 minutes for travel anywhere and were tight on time already, it seemed like a better idea to drive ourselves.

We ended up being a few minutes early for our reservation (imagine that!) and so got to look at all the fun Disney stuff in the Contemporary hotel.  This included James getting his first sighting of the Monorail.  He promptly fell in love and is still talking about the Monorail.  One thing about the Contemporary and Chef Mickey’s is that it is loud and there is a lot going on.  You can see the Monorail from most tables so you hear it each time it comes through and the restaurant is in the middle of the hotel which is just a huge open area so sound just amplifies.  It is not a quiet, peaceful dinner so be prepared for that.  And if your kids are easily distracted, well, know that they will be very distracted during your meal!

Once we sat down our waiter brought us our drink orders and then told us that we could go through the buffet.  He explained the order of tables that the characters would visit in so we would know when we needed to make sure we were at our table.  The buffet had a lot of options on it — everything from a salad bar, to kid friendly chicken nuggets and mac and cheese, to grown up ribs and lasagna — but, like all buffets, it wasn’t the highest quality of food.  There was also a dessert buffet with soft serve ice cream that was nice too.  And the buffet area was large so the line was never long to wait for food as opposed to another place we ate at later in the trip.  [Just as a FYI for toddlers who like lemonade the old-fashioned way, none of the restaurants where we ate had just plain lemonade, it was all flavored with something like pomegranate. Charlotte ended up liking it but was hesitant to try it at first.]

We had gotten our food and started to eat when the characters started coming towards our table.  Donald was first and I don’t even have a picture to show you because both of our kids were terrified.  Well, Charlotte wasn’t terrified, she was just unsure and didn’t want to get really close to him.  James on the other hand started crying when Donald got near him and tried to crawl into Jason’s lap to get away from him.  So, no pictures with Donald.  I was afraid at this point that our night was going to be a disaster.

But then the star of the show himself arrived.

Chef Mickeys 8

Jason got a picture with Mickey since this was his first real trip to Disney.  James watched with a mixture of fascination and horror.  Charlotte was still a little unsure about getting a picture by herself so I stepped in to get one with her.  As long as I was next to her she was really excited to see Mickey!

Chef Mickeys 7

Next came Minnie and Charlotte’s uneasiness disappeared.  One look at Minnie’s polka dots, ruffles, and bow and Charlotte because the outgoing little girl that we know her to be!

Chef Mickeys 6

Pluto was next and while I think James wanted to want to get down and give him a hug he couldn’t move past his fear.  But Charlotte jumped right up to hug Pluto’s neck!

Chef Mickeys 4

As we waited for the last character that was there that night, Goofy, James got tired of hanging out in his chair closest to the characters and so he came to hang out on the bench with Charlotte and me.  At least we have proof that we was, indeed, there with us at dinner that night!  He even looks pretty happy since there wasn’t a character around!

Chef Mickeys 3

Goofy finally made it to our table and I think we were all taken aback at how tall he was!  It was hard to get a picture with him and Charlotte.

Chef Mickeys 2

After our last character meeting we packed it up and headed back to the hotel.  In addition to pictures with the characters, they all signed Charlotte’s and James’ autograph books and they did a fun dance where everyone spun their napkins around a couple of times while we were there too.  I think it was a great way to kick off our vacation since it got the kids in the Disney mood in a less overwhelming setting before we hit the parks the next day.  To say that we ALL slept good that night would not be an exaggeration in the least!

Coming up tomorrow….day two with Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and dinner with the Princesses!

James’ Toy Recommendations

With Christmas approaching, I’m busy looking into gift ideas for my kiddos.  I love seeing what other parents are thinking about getting for their kids, but even more I love hearing what other kids my kids age actually love and play with.  So I thought that today I’d put together a list of some things that James is in love with right now.  He’s 14 months and can’t get enough of all of these items so if you’re in his ballpark age-range, I would definitely recommend any of these items!

(1) Melissa & Doug Deluxe 10-Piece Alphabet Nesting and Stacking Blocks
James loves these stacking blocks.  They are sturdy enough that he can’t hurt them even if he puts all of his weight on them, but they also all stack into one block for easy storage.  James loves stacking them and knocking them down.  I think they’ll also be nice to have as he gets older since they have colors, letters, and animals on them.

This sing-along train is one of James’ (and Charlotte’s!) favorites.  It plays “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” from The Lion King as well as says a few other phrases.  There are also stand alone animals (Simba, Lucky, and Dumbo) which are a big hit at our house.  James loves pushing the engine all over the house and stops to dance when it starts singing!
This little guy’s name is Woof-Woof at our house and he’s James’ lovey.  James can sleep without him, but he seems drawn to him the most when he’s in his bed.  His feet, tail, and ears are a little crunchy now from so much love, but he’s so soft and so easy to wash that I don’t mind at all.  He’s also not huge so he’s easy to throw in James’ bag when traveling.
James is definitely getting into his boy role and loves all balls these days.  He enjoys trying to play catch with anyone and “tackling” whoever has the ball.  He loves his Bama football but also enjoys any type of ball and this Melissa & Doug Sports Bag Fill & Spill has provided James with hours of entertainment.
Let’s be real, some days I’m at my wits end by the afternoon and the kids are too.  It’s on those days that I resort to Praise Baby dvd’s and I don’t even feel bad about it.  The kids spend about 30 minutes dancing and singing along to praise music while also exclaiming over the video of animals and kids and shapes and numbers and letters.  This one is one of our most requested dvd’s but we have a number of them and they are all fantastic.
While James might not say that he really loves his snack traps, I am very thankful for them!  They’re easy to clip onto his straps in his stroller while Charlotte is at dance and helps keep him entertained and also full.  This little boy will eat about anything you put in front of him so having a couple of these pre-filled are handy to pull out.  James manages to make a pretty big mess, even with the snack trap (Charlotte didn’t make nearly as much of a mess with them), but when we’re out and about the snack trap keeps them pretty contained.  I’ve found that these are a little easier for small hands to get food out of than some other brands of similar items.
I would love to hear some suggestions for James or Charlotte for Christmas lists or things that your kids love that I haven’t thought of!  Check out my friend Nicole’s Christmas Countdown series for her family’s wish lists this Christmas.
Disclaimer: No one asked me to list these items and my opinions are all my own. But if you purchase one of these items through these links on Amazon I might get a few pennies through the Amazon Associates program.

Toddler Must Haves – Fall 2011

Last week I posted about infant must haves and this week I’m updating what we currently couldn’t live without for Charlotte.  Some things have been on our must have list for a while and some are new for this stage but all are things that I use all the time with our 27 month old!

Charlotte can eat out of a regular bowl and plate but we 100% of the time still eat snacks out of snack traps because of Luca, our dog.  She still has to make sure and keep the snack trap out of Luca’s reach but this enables her to eat her snack in relative peace.  They’re also so handy when she’s snacking in the car or when we’re out.  I love the lids with them because then you can just fill them and throw them in your bag and not worry about snacks getting crushed before you can get them to your child and it helps them not pull out more than they can handle per bite.
Now that Charlotte is using a toddler fork and spoon to eat with we’ve run across a problem with going out to eat.  She still wants a fork or spoon to eat with (and I’d rather her keep eating with one) but restaurant silverware is way too big!  Enter take and toss silverware.  It’s cheap and can go into the dishwasher for at least a few washes and doesn’t add a lot of weight to a bag so it’s easy to carry around.  Charlotte loves being able to use her own sized silverware when we’re out and I don’t have to worry about her poking her eye out with a metal fork when we’re eating out!
I have always loved Table Toppers and that love hasn’t diminished now that Charlotte’s older.  I still prefer to “set” her place at the table when we go out by putting down a table topper and wiping the exposed table down with a Wet One.  I’m sure I’ll drop that habit now with James’ arrival and Charlotte getting older but for now these are still one of our best friends!
Shows/Movies/Pictures/Apps on Phone and iPad
I would highly recommend some type of smart device with kids this age.  Charlotte loves playing with anything that we have: iPad, my iPhone, even an old iPhone that she calls her iPadPhone.  We’ve got a few Mickey episodes and a few Wonder Pets episodes on them that we can pull out if she gets unsettled while out to eat or waiting at the doctor.  We have always created some photo albums of pictures of her that she loves to scroll through and ask who everyone is in the pictures.

Charlotte just recently got into apps on the iPad thanks to Memma’s smart thinking to download some new apps to entertain her during James’ birth.  She loves the 123 Color app and the Toddler Jukebox app.  Yesterday afternoon we spent literally the entire afternoon playing with them!

Happy Meal Books
A lot of places (especially Chick Fil A) have 3 and under toys with happy meals that are small board books.  I have found that these are so great for sticking in Charlotte’s bag and pulling out while we’re waiting somewhere.  She loves having new books to read that she doesn’t get to see everyday at home and I love that they are small and don’t take up room and get her reading books even while we’re out.  Target’s dollar spot also tends to have small books like this too if you don’t want to get the happy meal to get the book.  🙂
Wetbag
This bag has been handy since Charlotte was an infant.  Thankfully we haven’t really had to use it often but it’s great to keep packed with an extra outfit so that if she has an accident out we’ve got a set of everything we need and a waterproof place to put the wet clothes!
I talked about bag tags in the infant post last week and I still use the tags that I got when we moved for Charlotte, but I use Charlotte’s personalized stickers from Doodle Bugs Paper all the time now.  They’re perfect for sticking on a birthday present or a baby gift…I just add a little message at the top above her name and we’re good to go!  They also can quickly label her lunchbox or something else if I need to substitute out for the ones I usually send for lunch.  All around they’re very handy and cute!
Fake Jewelry
This ranges from mardi gras beads to plastic bracelets to faux pearl necklaces.  Anything works and it’s all equally loved by Charlotte.  With a necklace or a bracelet on she prances around and taking the jewelry off/putting it on keeps her occupied for a while!
Note: Again, no one asked me to do this and I wasn’t compensated in any way for any of these reviews.

Reading Thursday – Toddler Must Reads

*We are on our way to the eye doctor today to get Charlotte’s eyes checked.  If you could pray for a good appointment, a good trip, and a good day today we would appreciate it!

As you know, we’re a very reading centric family and Charlotte is no exception.  The books that she is most taken with changes pretty regularly but some that she is currently in love with are….

Charlie and I had this book growing up and Mom found it recently and got it out for Charlotte and she loves it!  Anything about pets is good for her but she loves Harry!

This book would be good for kids much younger also because Charlotte can basically read this one to herself but she loves looking for the green sheep and even when we’re not reading it she sometimes goes around the house asking where the green sheep is!

Dimity has been a favorite of C’s for months now and she’s very good at finishing the sentences in it.  She has even mastered the word “eiderdown” thanks to this book!

The cover bills this book as for 4-8 year olds but I can’t emphasize enough how much Charlotte loves Charlie and Suzie and Daisy the Cow.  Ree has a new, young fan in Charlotte!
And one’s that she loves and that we have but I don’t have pictures of….
This has some of her favorite Biscuit books but she loves ALL Biscuit books!

While we never read these at bedtime, Charlotte loves reading the stories in this book over and over and over again!
