Disney with Toddlers – Magic Kingdom

Disney With Toddlers

Our second full day in Orlando, we were headed to the Magic Kingdom.  We tried to get up a little earlier to hopefully avoid the bus situation from the day before (arriving just after — we assume — the bus left) and didn’t have to wait as long for a bus.  We arrived about 15 minutes after the park opened so there were small lines to enter and we missed the opening ceremony  but with two little’s used to being on Central time that was as good as we could do.

Magic Kingdom

We had pre-selected our FastPass+ rides (Winnie the Pooh, Dumbo, and the Teacups) and knew that we needed to head towards FantasyLand once we entered the park.  But we had time so we took our time walking down main street and walking through Cinderella’s castle.  As soon as James saw it he exclaimed “Castle!” and once Charlotte told him it was Cinderella’s he would say “Cin-rella’s castle!” every time he spotted it.

Magic Kingdom 1

After walking through the castle we noticed that the wait for Princess Fairytale Hall was only 10 minutes and we hadn’t gotten to see Rapunzel yet so we got in line.  The kids kept oohing and aahing over the “lavish” decorations in the castle and Charlotte was blown away when she got to see Cinderella’s glass slipper in a special case!  Then it was time to meet Rapunzel!

Magic Kingdom 2

Magic Kingdom 3

Magic Kingdom 4

They also got to see Snow White again!

Once the kids glimpsed the carousel they were determined to ride.  Thankfully, the line for it wasn’t too long either and so we got to hop on and let everyone take a spin.  The kids loved it!

Magic Kingdom 5

Magic Kingdom 6

Magic Kingdom 7

When we noticed that Belle’s castle was behind us (in the New Fantasyland) we had to get a picture with it in the background!

It was time for our Winnie the Pooh fast passes by then and boy were we glad that we had them!  The line was huge already for the ride but we walked straight up to the front.  Charlotte loved getting to sit in a honey pot and loved all the special effects on the ride.  James was just mesmerized by the whole thing.

Magic Kingdom 8

We continued on into Fantasyland and were disappointed to see that the teacups were being worked on.  They ended up being stopped the entire time we were there which was sad for me but the kids didn’t care.  Since that FastPass wasn’t going to pan out I got on my phone real quick and updated it to the Magic Carpets for later in the afternoon.  And then we headed to Dumbo where, sadly, I didn’t get any pictures.  But Charlotte loved making her elephant go up and down and I think James enjoyed it too when it wasn’t on the highest setting.

Jason had been talking to Charlotte about the rides and the roller coasters since before we left and had actually shown the kids videos he found online of some of the rides, specifically the Barnstormer.  So Charlotte was determined to ride it, but I was a little unsure if her big talking would hold out once she saw the ride and got to the front of the line.

Magic Kingdom 9

I shouldn’t have second guessed her determination….she LOVED it!  As soon as she and Jason got off she wanted to go get back in line with me so that I could go on it with her.  We face timed my parents while we were waiting in line and she was literally bouncing up and down squealing because she was so excited about the ride!  The only way we got her to leave was to talk her in to going and seeing mermaid Ariel….

Magic Kingdom 10

Going into the “New” Fantasyland area where Gaston’s Tavern and Ariel’s Grotto are was nice.  We had to wait a few minutes to see mermaid Ariel but the kids loved getting to sit with her.  And she called them her “Guppies” which thrilled Charlotte to no end.

We meandered through the other side of the park heading towards the Magic Carpets and knew that we were close to the Tiana area so we got in line to meet another princess.

Magic Kingdom 11

Even though Charlotte’s never seen her movie I think she enjoyed meeting Tiana because Tiana went on and on about her best friend being named Charlotte!

After meeting Tiana it was time for our lunch at the Crystal Palace with Winnie the Pooh and his friends!  At this point Jason and I were over character meals and the setting at the Crystal Palace isn’t the best.  There ended up being such a huge line for the so-so buffet that I fixed Jason’s plate along with mine because it would have taken him another 30 minutes to go wait in line himself.  I was afraid that I would miss the characters but it took them a while to make their rounds too.  James, again, wanted to stay far away from the characters but Charlotte jumped right up to give them all hugs!

Magic Kingdom 12 Tusker House

Magic Kingdom 15 Crystal Palace

Even though Jason and I were over the character meals and none of them were at ideal times for our family, I still think that they’re a good way to see characters without waiting in line.  Plus it’s nice to sit for a little while! After a very long lunch and with some time before our Magic Carpet fast passes, we headed to the Walt Disney World Railroad.

Magic Kingdom 16

Magic Kingdom 17

We rode the train all the way around the park and it was the perfect thing to do to take a break.  James was fascinated with the train part and the scenery and it was nice to just sit down for a little bit and relax.  I think James could have stayed on the train the rest of the afternoon but we had more fun to do!

Magic Kingdom 18

Magic Kingdom 19

Magic Kingdom 20

We got on Aladdin’s Magic Carpets and got to fly some more.  If you asked James when we got home what his favorite ride was he would say that the magic carpets were his favorite.  It’s basically the same ride as Dumbo just in a different vehicle.

By this time though we were all exhausted.  We headed back to the hotel thinking we might get back out to Downtown Disney or something that night after resting but decided instead to head to the pool.  James didn’t want anything to do with the water so he snuggled in my lap and watched Mickey while Charlotte continued her dare deviling ways from the morning and conquered the huge twisty water slide!

Room 16

We ate dinner at the casual dining restaurant next to the pool, The Mara, and then got to bed early to try and recoup some of the missed nap times and late bedtimes/early risings!  Off to Animal Kingdom tomorrow!

Disney with Toddlers – All the Gear

Disney With Toddlers

I decided that I’d break up the posts about our family trip with a tips post so that you all don’t get bored for the last two weeks of this series when tips are all I’m doing.  Today, I’m going to talk about our gear for Disney…stroller, on hand every day at the park, etc.  This will just cover our in the park stuff, not travel gear or general packing tips.

Magic Kingdom 1

STROLLERS

Since we drove we took our own Baby Jogger City Mini Double.  It was a great stroller to take due to it’s skinny width and our familiarity with it.  We never had an issue getting it through a door, although I do remember a few doors in Animal Kingdom on our way out of the Safari that were just wide enough to get through.  But, that being said, we made it through those without a problem and never had to struggle with it.  It’s very easy to maneuver and I felt more comfortable having the kids in our own stroller than renting one.  But that’s really only because it was easy for us to take one.

If you’re flying or have limited space in your car to bring your own stroller, I would definitely recommend renting one.  There are a couple different options available for renting.  Since we didn’t rent, I don’t have a personal recommendation for one over the other but I can give you the information that I was given and tell you what I saw.

Option 1. Renting in the park.

Renting Disney’s own strollers is recommended for those who will only need them occasionally.  The strollers available for rent on Disney property are the hard plastic type and aren’t generally conducive for napping or resting toddlers.  In addition, pricing for Disney’s strollers can accumulate much faster than an off-site service the provides you a stroller for your entire trip.

To rent a Disney stroller you must go to the stroller rental area at the front of each park.  Strollers are not allowed out of the park when you leave it.  If you hop to a different park during the same day, I’ve heard that you can show your receipt and they will give you another stroller without having to pay again.  The limit of not being able to take the stroller from the park can be a perk (you don’t have to fold it up and handle it on buses or transportation) but can also be detrimental because you sometimes have to wait for buses for 15-30 minutes which can be a long time without a sitting area other than the ground for little one’s.

Option 2. Renting from a local rental agency (like Orlando Stroller Rentals).

Businesses like OSR can provide with you a stroller similar to what you use at home.  Most of their strollers are the Baby Jogger brand just like what we have at home and used in the park.  They will drop off the stroller to your hotel (or to wherever you’re staying including a rental home as long as it’s within a 15 min radius of their store) or you can pick up the stroller at their store.  You can also drop your stroller off at your hotel when you leave to go home.

A benefit of renting a stroller like this is that you have one stroller for your entire trip.  You pick it up when you arrive and don’t turn it back in until you leave.  This means you can keep your essentials in the stroller during your whole week and don’t have to unload it every time you leave a park.  But, as a downside, you will be transporting it with you on buses/transportation and will have to keep it in your room with you at night.

OSR does offer some add on’s like rain covers and a glider board and all strollers come with a Baby Jogger parent console which has cup holders.  Also, OSR was started by a Mom just like us and so cleaning strollers is a top priority.  They use a non-toxic all natural cleaner on all strollers between each use.

We had our own stroller and so had to carry it with us everywhere we went.  That meant that we folded it up to get on the bus every time we rode it which was a little cumbersome.  And it left me holding James and holding Charlotte’s hand to get on/off the bus as Jason took care of the stroller.  It’s something to think about.

It also seemed like every other person in the park had a Baby Jogger City Mini Double stroller and a lot of them were red like ours.  You need to be prepared with something to put on your stroller so that you can recognize it quickly.  The stroller parking areas are CROWDED and it’s a sea of strollers.  We used these luggage tags in bright colors and attached them to both sides of our stroller handlebar and the center post to make it easier to spot.  I also read that an idea is to attach glow bracelets or necklaces to the handlebar at night to make them easier to identify.

Speaking of stroller parking, it was a little unsettling to me the first day when we got to Hollywood Studios and just saw a huge area of strollers hanging out in the middle of the Animation courtyard.  I was nervous about leaving our expensive stroller just out in the open with no real control over someone walking up to it and taking off with it.  I’ll talk about our park parking in a second, but I always took the backpack with our valuables (phones, wallets, etc) and would leave everything else in the stroller.  We never had any problems with anything being taken and found that most everyone at Disney was there to enjoy it just like we were.

In addition, you might feel like your kids are too old for a stroller.  I would recommend you erring on the side of having it and not needing it rather than getting in the park without one and realizing that you wish you had one.  Charlotte rarely rides in the stroller anymore (she’s 4.5) but she rode in the one at Disney a lot.  It’s a LOT of walking even for grown ups so for little legs to try and keep up with grown-ups who are walking fast it can get tiring quickly.  Plus, it’s nice to have a place to store/hang your stuff so you’re not carrying everything around all the time.

IN THE PARK PACKING

I’m sure everyone’s needs in the park are going to be different but I wanted to share what we did and what worked for us.

-Always in the Stroller (lower portion)

Complete change of clothes for each child in a plastic bag (dirty/wet clothes can go in the plastic bag if you have to change)
One liter bottle of water (you can bring your own in as long as it’s not a glass bottle)
Park maps/Character times
Sweaters/light jackets

-Always on the stroller (front with kids)

Water Bottle Bag full of water for each kid (attached to their seat buckle with attached carabiner)
SippiGrip to hold an additional cup or snacks or lovie

-Kids Backpack attached to stroller by Mommy Hook, also had a luggage tag

Diapers, wipes, changing pad
Wet Wipes
Tissues
Band-aids/neosporin
Snacks (Peanut Butter crackers, Buddy Fruit, etc)
Sunscreen
Kids hats/sunglasses

-Second backpack, attached to stroller when moving, taken in to rides when stroller parked, also had a luggage tag

Autograph books and pens
Wet Wipes
Camera (Nikon J1 during the day, Canon EOS Rebel at night)
Phones/Wallets

I saw prior to going suggestions of getting throw away poncho’s for everyone in the family for every day but with next to no chance of rain for our trip we didn’t bother with that or with taking an umbrella.  We also didn’t take anything to entertain the kids while waiting because we didn’t plan to be waiting for very long.  It ended up fine but know that even with fast passes they just get you to the front of the line for a show and you often have to wait there for the show to start.

So that’s what we ended up packing daily to go in to the park and my two (or ten) cents about strollers.  Did I leave anything out?  If you have things to add please leave them in the comments!

Disney With Toddlers – Hollywood Studios and Epcot

Disney With Toddlers

We started off our first full day at Disney World by heading to Hollywood Studios in the morning.  We didn’t rush to get an early start and ended up at the buses at our hotel around 9:15 am.  There were some bus issues that morning but only to Hollywood Studios.  Maybe the bus system had heard that Hollywood Studios was supposed to be the least crowded that day just like we did and so didn’t think they’d need the buses?  I’m not sure but eventually they got there and we got to Hollywood Studios.

Hollywood Studios

We knew that there wasn’t a ton for us to do at Hollywood Studios and so only planned to spend the morning there.  We had pre-scheduled our Fast Passes with the new FastPass+ system on our Mickey Bands and so headed straight to the Animation Courtyard for our first Fast Pass  event…Disney Junior Live on Stage!

Hollywood Studios 2

We got a picture of the kids with a big picture of Mickey before we went in.  Jake and Sophia were both signing autographs outside of the theater but the lines were too long to stand in and still make our Fast Pass time so we skipped seeing them.  Plus, our kids don’t watch either of their shows so it wasn’t a top priority for us.

Hollywood Studios 4

I had read that you didn’t want to be right at the front for this show so I made sure to sit behind people.  We probably should have waited a little longer to get in the Fast Pass line though because we were still pretty close to the front.  So, word of advice, don’t be the first people in the Fast Pass line for Disney Junior Live on Stage.  I wasn’t sure what the show was going to be like but was not expecting a real hostess as well as puppets from the stage.  It soon made sense why you didn’t want to be on the front row because the puppets aren’t particularly tall so in order to see them well you need to be back a little ways.

Hollywood Studios 5

Hollywood Studios 6

Hollywood Studios 7

I’m guessing the story changes based on the popular shows on Disney Junior but we got to see the Mickey characters, the characters from Doc McStuffins, as well as the characters from Sophia the First and Jake and the Neverland Pirates.  The kids were up dancing during some of it and had a great time.  It was the perfect way to kick off our morning!

Before we left for Disney my Mom had brought over some old photo albums from our family trips to Disney World.  Charlotte decided that she really wanted to go to the “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” playground after she saw a picture of my brother and I at the playground.  So we headed there after the Disney  Junior show since our Voyage of the Little Mermaid Fast Passes weren’t until after lunch.

Hollywood Studios 8

Hollywood Studios 9

They have greatly reduced the area of the playground to make way for other attractions but it was still a fun place to burn off some energy.  Charlotte loved going down the big leaf slide but neither of the kids would pose on the giant ant to recreate the picture of Charlie and me.  I think the enclosed area and lots of kids was a little overwhelming for James also so he was ready to leave pretty quickly.  I was beginning to get hungry and figured everyone would feel better after eating so we started walking around to find a place to eat lunch.

We settled on the ABC Commissary for lunch and were pleasantly surprised at the food.  We went a little early (around 11:30) and so beat the lunch crowd.  By the time we left it was packed.  I didn’t love that they had tv’s playing scenes from ABC shows everywhere — my kids don’t get to see much of anything on ABC other than football — but I don’t think they really paid attention to any of that.  Mostly they were excited about the giant cupcake that was waiting for them after they finished their lunches!

Hollywood Studios 11

We then headed back to the Animation Courtyard for The Voyage of the Little Mermaid.  We weren’t sure about having both of them sit through the show since they can’t sit through the movie due to the scary part, but Charlotte was determined to see it and we had a long talk about how it was not real.

Hollywood Studios 3

Hollywood Studios 12

The show was so impressive with rain drops falling down on us, great visual effects, and a real Ariel who was a mermaid then became a princess!  Charlotte closed her eyes through all the Ursula parts (which are very violent, just like the movie) but she was fine hearing it and not seeing it.  James just watched the whole thing in amazement.  We were near the beginning of the Fast Pass line and sat around row 7 or 8.  Since we were first in we had to go all the way to the left hand side of the stage but we could still see everything perfectly.  The kids did sit on our laps so that they could see.

Hollywood Studios 13

After the Voyage of the Little Mermaid, we set out to find a happy for Charlotte and James.  She had spotted a Pluto with jingle bells earlier in the day and we promised her that she could get it before we left.  They each ended up with a new Christmas themed Disney baby and we headed back to the hotel to have a little rest time.

Epcot

After a little rest (and by rest I mean time spent on the balcony watching the animals) it was time to head back out to Epcot.  Our bus transportation to Epcot went much smoother than the morning had and it was a very quick ride to Epcot.  Jason and I grabbed our only “parent” picture of the trip while we waited on the bus.

Epcot 11

Epcot 12

The beauty of Park Hopper passes means that you can go to multiple parks on a single day, but the new FastPass+ system only allows you to get three fast passes for a single park per day.  Because of this we didn’t have any Fast Passes at Epcot and weren’t sure where to spend our time.  We had dinner reservations for later on that night but no real plan when we entered the park.  After checking the character times we found that the characters that are exclusively at Epcot (specifically Mulan) weren’t going to be out when we were there.  So we decided to head to The Seas with Nemo to see how long its wait was going to be.  We ended up basically walking straight onto the Nemo ride, but be prepared that the walk even with no wait is dark and twisty and long before you actually get to the ride!

The kids loved the ride and loved the huge aquariums once we got off the ride even better.  They loved seeing real turtles (at that time James’ favorite animal was a turtle so he was over the moon) and got to see some big manatees swimming.  We didn’t go into Turtle Talk with Crush but have heard great things about it!

After The Seas we meandered through the park munching on some snacks.  Popcorn was the kids favorite throughout the trip and would last a really long time.  We would ask for a second empty container and split it between the kids — it was perfect!  I was wanting a pretzel but settled for a Nutella crepe in France.  It wasn’t as good as those in front of the Orsay in Paris but was pretty close!

We saw Mary Poppins as we walked through England but she was about to go on break so we went ahead to France.  We happened into line for Princess Aurora and that was when the kids evening started turning magical.

Epcot 1

Epcot 3

Epcot 2

While James would have nothing to do with the characters in full costume, he had no problem snuggling up to all of the princesses!  Father Christmas was also doing his talk on Christmas in France next to the line for Aurora so we got to listen to that while we waited.  After meeting Aurora we scouted out Belle’s location (she was currently on break) and got in line to meet my favorite Princess.

Epcot 4

I had heard that the Belle in France was one of the nicest characters in all of the theme parks and she didn’t disappoint.  She encouraged the kids to read and asked them what their favorite books were.  She was so kind and genuine and I kind of wish that I had gotten a picture with her!

We left Belle and ran back to England hoping to get into the Mary Poppins line before it closed.  We made it and got to listen to a band playing some classic English rock in the England amphitheater while we waited.

Epcot 5

Mary Poppins told Charlotte and James that they had proper English names and was very sweet to them.  As we strolled away from Mary Poppins James said, “Mary Poppins nice….Mary Poppins cute!”  I think for the rest of the trip he wanted to go back to see Mary Poppins!

We didn’t make the Candlelight Vigil that is held in America at Epcot which I was disappointed about.  If you go at Christmas you should definitely schedule your meals so that you can get priority seating for the Vigil because it is amazing with a celebrity reader reading the Christmas story every night and a choir singing hymns.  We did manage to walk up as Neil Patrick Harris was finishing up one of the Vigil’s though (there are three each night) and got to hear the end of the show.  Even from a distance it was wonderful and so moving to hear so many people celebrating Christ’s birth.

We continued through the countries until we got to Norway where we were headed for a very special dinner with the princesses.  Our reservations were at 6:45 (way too late!) and it was dark by the time we reached Norway.  It was also very crowded with long lines to see the sisters from “Frozen”.  There was confusion with the staff at Akershus about when we could get in line for dinner based on when we had reservations also.  Basically, it was my least favorite time of the whole trip.  We did eventually make it in for dinner though and watching Charlotte’s face light up as she met the princesses made it all worth it.

Epcot 6 Askerhus

Epcot 7 Askerhus

After Cinderella came to the table, it was time for the parade of Princes and Princesses.  All the kids went up to the closest princess and then they paraded around the restaurant.  It was pretty neat and I think Charlotte and James enjoyed it even if they didn’t really know what they were doing.

Charlotte was being pretty patient waiting for her favorite princess but once Ariel got closer to our table she was basically bouncing up and down in her chair waiting for her.  And then, the moment that Charlotte had been waiting for for six months arrived and she got to meet Ariel!

Epcot 8 Askerhus

Epcot 9 Askerhus

There were other princesses that came by after Ariel, but it was all kind of downhill after her.  The kids were tired, we were exhausted, and Charlotte’s dreams had been fulfilled.  They did enjoy seeing Snow White (although her voice was one I had to adjust to) and we saw Aurora again.

Epcot 10 Askerhus

As we left dinner we enjoyed walking back through the World Showcase to the front of the park.  Everything was decorated for Christmas and even though it was pitch black and there aren’t too many lights, it was still enjoyable to walk in the cool night air.  We headed back to the hotel for another good night of sleep!

Disney With Toddlers – Traveling and Chef Mickey’s

Disney With Toddlers

Now that I’ve wrapped up Christmas, I hope you are ready to hear A LOT about our trip to Disney World.  I literally have posts ready to go for the next three (!) weeks with all of our details.  And if you wonder how I can stretch it out that long, let me tell you that I had over 10 pages of typed notes for our trip before we left so my engineer self went into overdrive with this trip and I want to share anything that might help you.  I’ll be covering everything from what we did to book and what we learned to the tips that we found for all of the parks and things that we found online that didn’t apply to us but I thought might help you.

I’m going to start off with a chronological look at our trip including more personal stuff like what we did, what the kids liked, etc.  And I’ll get to more of the nitty-gritty details after I cover our trip in particular.  I’m also going to be adding a page for Disney that I’ll had to the header once I get finished with all my posts so that it will be an easy reference for the future.

So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

*********************************

We chose to drive to Orlando because flights were very expensive and we just couldn’t pull the trigger on the added expense.  So we woke the kids up at 4am on Sunday, December 1, and put them in the car in their jammies.  We were hoping and praying that they would fall right back to sleep but, unfortunately, they didn’t.  James slept maybe a total of 2 hours during the entire ride down, which ended up being a good 12 hour drive due to traffic.  And Charlotte didn’t close her eyes for a second!  But the miracle of it all was that they were fantastic during the whole ride.

Maybe it was because they had known about our trip since we started planning it back in April and so were excited but weren’t too excited.  Or maybe….I really don’t know what it was, but I had plenty of activities for them and along with watching a little bit of Mickey, Doc McStuffins, and Mary Poppins they were great travel companions.

Car 2

James is checking out some stick puppets that I made for him.

Car 3

Charlotte’s making up stories with her princess stick puppets.

Car 4

And maybe the biggest lifesaver was that I had recorded the stories to four read-aloud story books before we left.  They could look through those books and have them read to them while we were in the car without us having to do the reading in the car — perfect!

While the kids were great in the car, this pregnant Mama, got very antsy when we were literally stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic just north of Orlando for an hour and a half.  Thank you Lord for the technology in iPhones and the Google Maps app that will show you traffic because we got off the interstate and went the back ways a little bit in order to get to Disney in time.

In time for what you ask?  We had reservations at Chef Mickey’s for dinner on Sunday night!  Not the best planning on our part considering that we had such a long drive, but, since we made it with a little time to spare, we call it a great decision in hindsight because it let the kids get introduced to everything in a smaller dose before we hit a park.

Chef Mickeys 5

We had heard GREAT things about Chef Mickey’s and were excited to get there.  Our kids have loved watching the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on Disney Junior for years so I knew that they would want to get an up close and personal look at all the characters and I’d heard that Chef Mickey’s was a great place to do it without having to stand in line.  I would highly recommend a meal here because even with the lesser park crowds when we were there, there was ALWAYS a huge line around the Clubhouse characters in the parks.

Chef Mickeys 1

We chose to drive from our hotel (Animal Kingdom Jambo House) to the Contemporary Resort where Chef Mickey’s is located.  We were told at our hotel that by valeting at one resort, you are able to valet at all Disney resorts without paying an extra fee (you do need to tip each time though).  Because of this we were able to simply drive to the Contemporary and drive right up to the door with very little traffic or wait time!  Had we not driven ourselves to the Contemporary, I believe that we would have had to have taken the bus to the Magic Kingdom and then ridden the Monorail to the Contemporary.  Since we hadn’t done Disney transportation yet and heard to allow 45 minutes for travel anywhere and were tight on time already, it seemed like a better idea to drive ourselves.

We ended up being a few minutes early for our reservation (imagine that!) and so got to look at all the fun Disney stuff in the Contemporary hotel.  This included James getting his first sighting of the Monorail.  He promptly fell in love and is still talking about the Monorail.  One thing about the Contemporary and Chef Mickey’s is that it is loud and there is a lot going on.  You can see the Monorail from most tables so you hear it each time it comes through and the restaurant is in the middle of the hotel which is just a huge open area so sound just amplifies.  It is not a quiet, peaceful dinner so be prepared for that.  And if your kids are easily distracted, well, know that they will be very distracted during your meal!

Once we sat down our waiter brought us our drink orders and then told us that we could go through the buffet.  He explained the order of tables that the characters would visit in so we would know when we needed to make sure we were at our table.  The buffet had a lot of options on it — everything from a salad bar, to kid friendly chicken nuggets and mac and cheese, to grown up ribs and lasagna — but, like all buffets, it wasn’t the highest quality of food.  There was also a dessert buffet with soft serve ice cream that was nice too.  And the buffet area was large so the line was never long to wait for food as opposed to another place we ate at later in the trip.  [Just as a FYI for toddlers who like lemonade the old-fashioned way, none of the restaurants where we ate had just plain lemonade, it was all flavored with something like pomegranate. Charlotte ended up liking it but was hesitant to try it at first.]

We had gotten our food and started to eat when the characters started coming towards our table.  Donald was first and I don’t even have a picture to show you because both of our kids were terrified.  Well, Charlotte wasn’t terrified, she was just unsure and didn’t want to get really close to him.  James on the other hand started crying when Donald got near him and tried to crawl into Jason’s lap to get away from him.  So, no pictures with Donald.  I was afraid at this point that our night was going to be a disaster.

But then the star of the show himself arrived.

Chef Mickeys 8

Jason got a picture with Mickey since this was his first real trip to Disney.  James watched with a mixture of fascination and horror.  Charlotte was still a little unsure about getting a picture by herself so I stepped in to get one with her.  As long as I was next to her she was really excited to see Mickey!

Chef Mickeys 7

Next came Minnie and Charlotte’s uneasiness disappeared.  One look at Minnie’s polka dots, ruffles, and bow and Charlotte because the outgoing little girl that we know her to be!

Chef Mickeys 6

Pluto was next and while I think James wanted to want to get down and give him a hug he couldn’t move past his fear.  But Charlotte jumped right up to hug Pluto’s neck!

Chef Mickeys 4

As we waited for the last character that was there that night, Goofy, James got tired of hanging out in his chair closest to the characters and so he came to hang out on the bench with Charlotte and me.  At least we have proof that we was, indeed, there with us at dinner that night!  He even looks pretty happy since there wasn’t a character around!

Chef Mickeys 3

Goofy finally made it to our table and I think we were all taken aback at how tall he was!  It was hard to get a picture with him and Charlotte.

Chef Mickeys 2

After our last character meeting we packed it up and headed back to the hotel.  In addition to pictures with the characters, they all signed Charlotte’s and James’ autograph books and they did a fun dance where everyone spun their napkins around a couple of times while we were there too.  I think it was a great way to kick off our vacation since it got the kids in the Disney mood in a less overwhelming setting before we hit the parks the next day.  To say that we ALL slept good that night would not be an exaggeration in the least!

Coming up tomorrow….day two with Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and dinner with the Princesses!

Traveling To a Game With Your Family!

As our first home game approaches this weekend, I’m excited to bring you a post that Kendra Thornton and I collaborated on about traveling to football game’s with your family.  We have had so many wonderful experiences at games together and I want other parents to know that enjoying yourself at a game with your kids is possible and is so much fun!  Without further ado, here is what Kendra and I came up with.

Traveling to the game with your family

As the summer comes to end, you may be thinking that your opportunity for enjoying a family vacation is over, but that is simply not the case! During the fall season, there are many different opportunities to travel as a family including heading out to a weekend football game! If your family enjoys sporting events, there’s nothing better than sitting back, relaxing and watching your favorite team or alma matter compete in a rivalry game! Bring back that old-fashioned school spirit and let your children experience the energy and enthusiasm that football brings with it!

Accommodation Options

As you prepare to plan the perfect weekend getaway to a football game with your family this fall, you may be wondering where you should stay during your travels. Whether traveling to my home city, Chicago, for a Bears game or a Northwestern game, or to your own alma matter, it’s important to have comfortable accommodations. Opting to stay at a hotel, or in your very own recreational vehicle, can be tons of fun for the kids. Before traveling, it is highly important to do your research on hotels in the area, as a bad hotel can truly ruin your entire stay and weekend that was supposed to be filled with fun. By choosing to rent an RV during your stay, your family can relax in their own private mobile home complete with luxurious features, details and comfortable sleeping arrangements. Renting an RV for the weekend can be lots of fun for the entire family and provides you with an authentic camping experience. You may even choose to tailgate right from your RV to add to the overall experience.

A Family Bonding Experience

Traveling to a football game this fall provides you with an excellent opportunity to really bond with your family. Tailgating is a wonderful pastime associated with football weekends, and they are filled with endless fun. While you and your spouse should enjoy yourselves, remember to be responsible, as your children are with you. Toss the football around with them, teach them fun tailgating games, and bask in the excitement as the game begins to draw near! Remember to get your parking pass for the day and cook up a delicious meal right from the back of your vehicle. Don’t forget to bring along the lawn chairs and relax in the parking lot while enjoying your food and playing fun-filled games with the kids such as cornhole toss, ladder ball and more.

Enjoying the Game as a Family

You might think that you won’t be able to enjoy the game if your children are with you, but that’s simply not the case as long as you are prepared.  Make sure to check the seating chart before leaving so that you know if your seats will be in the sun or shade, covered or uncovered, heated/cooled or not.  These things can be important in making sure that you have packed your bag correctly for the game.  Don’t forget to bring a hat for your children if you’ll be in the sun.  Something else that we’ve found very useful is a misting fan which can help you and your kids stay cool when the weather hasn’t gotten the message that it’s fall yet. And as the season moves on make sure you switch out the gear in your bag to include a blanket that can be rolled tightly to save space.  Disposable poncho’s are also good to have in the car in case rain threatens.  Just be sure to check the stadium’s policy on what you can and can’t bring in with you before you leave your house.  You’d hate to have a bag perfectly packed and then have to leave it at the gate because it’s larger than the stadium allows.

Getaway from your ordinary life this season and head out to the game with the kids. Whether you choose to visit your local football stadium or prefer to visit an out-of-state team, there are endless options of fun that you can enjoy during your travels with the entire family.

Escape to Watercolor

It was a long summer y’all.  We were fortunate enough to get to take an anniversary trip in April to Paris and are planning on a trip to Disney in December.  So we made the decision to forgo a summer vacation and just stay here.  But by the second week in July we were both greatly regretting that decision.  One Friday afternoon Jason got home from work and I was laying on a couch with my arms over my face, the kids were dancing in the middle of the den while the tv was on.  I had a headache and it had been a long week.  Jason decided that this was the perfect time to surprise me with the news that he had booked a long weekend for us at the Watercolor Inn the weekend after our anniversary!

The next Thursday we headed to the beach and it was a wonderful trip.  It was short, but just the drive down when we got to talk to each other and not have to spell any words to avoid little ears understanding what we were talking about was wonderful.  We had never been to the Watercolor Inn before and were pleasantly surprised when we got to our room.  It was very large and so well appointed!  Plus it was really clean and they left us freshly baked cookies every night at turndown, you can’t beat that!

After we got checked in to the room we headed out to explore the area and grab a late dinner.  We ended up at The Wine Bar and had a delicious dinner.  If you’re there you MUST have the bisque and I would highly recommend the shrimp skewers!

We slept blissfully late on Friday morning and then headed to the restaurant in the Inn, Fish Out of Water, for their breakfast buffet.  The Challah Bread French Toast was amazing and this girl who has always thought that grits were so so was blown away by them!

The view didn’t hurt either….

We finally headed out to the beach where we had reserved chairs.  It was so nice to be able to walk out and have the staff take us directly to our chairs and set up our umbrella.  It was hot but gorgeous and we enjoyed some time reading!

That afternoon we made the unfortunate decision to try and bike down to Rosemary Beach, where we were more familiar. Just a heads up, don’t ever try that unless you’re an experienced biker.  We gave up 5 miles into the 19 mile ride and when we drove back down there we realized that we had barely even started the trek when we turned back!

Watercolor Inn Fish Out of Water Crepe

On Saturday morning we ate at Fish Out of Water again but I went for something reminiscent of our last trip: Nutella and Banana Crepes.  They weren’t  as good as the street vendors from Paris but they were a nice start to the morning!

We enjoyed another nice day on the beach.  It was actually a lot less crowded on Saturday and our chairs were on the front row instead of the second.  We practically had the place to ourselves for a while and enjoyed some time reading and enjoying the waves.

After a number of hours on the beach we headed back in to get ready to walk to Seaside for dinner.  This is the view of the Watercolor Inn from the boardwalk.

We ate at the BBQ food truck in Seaside and enjoyed some ice cream before heading back to sit at the Adults Only pool and read.  The lights in the pool were fantastic and made lounging in chairs reading even more enjoyable.

*I was not compensated in any way for this post and the people at the Inn know nothing about me.  I just wanted to share our experience with what we felt was a great place to stay for a couple’s trip!
