Make Way for James

James is two and a half today and, my goodness, where has the time gone?!?! It seems like just yesterday that he was so small that preemie sized clothes swallowed him and now he is so grown up and has such a huge personality. I thought that there would be no better time than today to tell the story of James in pictures and words because this little man has a lot going on!

IMG_5170

James loves with all his heart and two things that he really loves are his blankie and his jammies.  He would prefer to stay in jammies all day every day and never get dressed.  And he must have his blankie whenever he is in bed.  In addition to that, he must be holding the crocheted baseballs on one of the corners of his blankie!  Sometimes he gets food on his jammies (like in this picture) and runs around for a while without a shirt, but he’d prefer a full set of jammies any time.  Here he’s diligently watching his blankie get a bath in the washing machine.  He’s happy now, but let me tell you that there was screaming and gnashing of teeth when we first took the blankie away to put it in the wash!

IMG_4818-edited_1

James has found the greatest playmate in his big sister.  They are getting in to more and more sibling squabbles, but for the most part they play together great.  And James will do ANYTHING that Charlotte does.  Like above, Charlotte decided to try and catch snowflakes on her tongue so immediately James stuck his out too.  He has a huge vocabulary from listening and repeating what Charlotte says and she is great to help him do things around the house.  They are so sweet (and sometimes frustrating) to watch play together.  Hopefully they’re friendship will help with the transition of adding another sibling to the family.

IMG_5033

James is a super picky eater.  I tell Jason often that it’s his fault because he’s still pretty picky, but I also think some of it is just being a boy and wanting to assert himself.  His favorite food is graham crackers with “peanter” (aka peanut butter).  Which I guess is good since he refuses to eat any meat so hopefully the protein in the PB makes up for it.  He loves milk and drinks it almost all of the time, although I send water to school and he drinks that too.  He still loves fruit but occasionally can go through stages where one of his favorites becomes a non-starter.  We have found that he enjoys a spicier palette than Charlotte and I do and when we went to eat Mexican the other night he literally ate an entire cupful of salsa with his chips!

IMG_5060

There should be no question that James is all boy.  While he can name all the princesses due to Sissy’s influence, if there is a sport on or a chance to throw the ball he is all about it.  He seems to like almost all sports and will watch any of them on tv — hockey, rugby, soccer, football, baseball, golf, basketball — although golf, baseball, and football are his favorites.  When we got to play outside a few weeks ago because it was pretty all he wanted to do was play golf and kept telling us to watch him hit it “in hole” or “in bunker.”  But then last weekend Jason had ESPN on and they were showing shots from baseball spring training and James pitched a fit when they switched to showing another sport because he wanted to keep watching baseball.  Who knows what he’ll decide on in the end to focus his love on in the end, but he is a lot of fun to watch at this stage of trying everything out!

IMG_5074

James is often an all or nothing kid and we’ve found no better reflection of this than in his preference of parents.  During the week he usually only wants me and will cry “I want my mommy!” if Jason as much as tries to pick him up or change his diaper without me (sometimes even if I’ve standing there too but Jason’s the one actually doing the task!).  But on the weekends, he morphs into a little boy in love with his Daddy.  He wants to sit with Daddy and play catch with Daddy and be just like his Daddy.  As I mentioned before he gets a spicy palette from his Daddy as you can see here with them both enjoying a fried onion and dipping sauce at dinner!

IMG_5100

James is still a snuggler.  He doesn’t like being far away from me when it’s just the two of us at home and says “sit wif me” frequently on those days.  He has a pile full of babies in his bed just like his sister does and transitions through a favorite every couple of days.  Yesterday morning I was sitting on the couch about to read with him when he sat up and put his arms around my neck and said, “Always love you!”  I’m pretty sure he could have asked for the moon right then and I would have given it to him.  I pray that I never forget the feel of those sweet arms around my neck or the sound of him asking for a “baby kiss” or a “big kiss”!

IMG_5110

I’m not sure that I realized exactly how silly Jason was until we had kids and they became the silliest, craziest kids.  One day while we waited in carpool I heard James saying, “Help! Help!” and I turned around and he said, “Help! Budderball’s on my head!” and started giggling.  For a while he thought it was great to be called a Silly Billy but now he’ll correct you and tell you that he’s a boy not a billy and wants to be called a silly boy.  Between all of his faces done on command (surprised, sad, happy) and all the funny things he says, he keeps us in stitches most of the time!

IMG_5154

James has gotten in to the “helper” stage and while it sometimes makes tasks take twice as long I’m trying to let him help me as much as he can.  For instance,  he now has to help me unload the dishwasher and is good at putting the non-breakables up.  Last weekend when I was doing clothes he wanted to help me move from the washer to the dryer so I stood back and let him move every single piece of clothing to the dryer — it was awesome!  He also works hard to hand me all of the pillows that go on the bed when I’m making it.  He keeps up a constant refrain of how hard it is and how strong he is and will frequently show me his “muscles” after every pillow.  And when I was going to make Jason’s birthday cake he wanted to help so I set him up with a spatula and a bowl with some flour in it expecting him to make a mess.  But he didn’t even spill more than a drop! I was so impressed!  He is definitely growing up!

IMG_4535

James has definitely come in to his own personality in the past few months.  If he doesn’t want to do something he’ll let you know loud and clear.  And time out’s have become an almost daily occurrence at our house.  He is good to mimic Charlotte in her manners and thank you’s but also mimics some of her attitude that’s started which is no fun for anyone.  Hopefully, we’re getting some of it under control as he’s learning that when we say no we really mean no (which means we have to work hard to stick with what we say).  With his own likes and dislikes and opinions, it’s not easy to forget that he is his own little person with his own mind!

IMG_4581

I’ve gotten lots of comments from others in the past month or so about how well James is talking.  I always tell them that with a sister who talks all day every day, there’s not much he can do but pick it up and try to get in the conversation!  Sometimes we have to call in the translator (aka Charlotte) to try and decipher what he’s saying, but for the most part we understand because he seems to make a big point of annunciating his words.  Some of my favorite James-isms are his southern accent (me-yelk “milk”, hey-yelp “help”, pee-shew “pee-yew (like for a skunk)”), his shortened words (prise! “surprise!”,ta na! “ta da!”), and his own unique phrases (huh, that’s wee-ard! “huh, that’s weird!”, my perfect! (used when he doesn’t want to do something like get cleaned up or wash his hands), who dat name? “what’s that person/thing’s name?”).

IMG_4616

James has found a love of trains and, while he hasn’t played with his train track from Santa in a few weeks, he still loves all things related to Thomas and Sodor.  He is almost equally enamored with any type of vehicle and is usually the first one to spot a “barbage truck” (garbage truck) or “dunk truck” (dump truck) when we’re out running errands.  He can name most types of construction machinery (like backhoe, digger, etc) and also loves planes and cars!

IMG_4606

Just for some stats/record keeping: he’s still in size 5 diapers and has very little interest in potty training.  He sleeps about 12 hours a night and naps for a few hours in the afternoon although he’ll wake up and play in his bed during one or either of those times if he’s not tired.  He can skip that afternoon nap if he needs to but most of the time it’s not worth it.  He wears size 2T pants and mostly 2T shirts but can wear smaller 3T shirts or jammies.  His shoe size is between 7 and 7 1/2.

James,

You are such a treasure to us and we are so thankful that we get to be your parents.  You are growing into such a sweet and kindhearted little boy and we love getting to watch you grow.  We can’t wait to see what God has in store for you.  Watching you learn about God and Jesus and talking to them is one of the greatest joys in my life.  We love you so much little buddy!

Happy Birthday to my little TWO year old!

2013 08 07_0931_edited-1

Happy 2nd Birthday James!

It is unbelievable to me that you are already TWO!!  Where in the world has time gone?!?!  Weren’t you just my teeny tiny peanut of a baby?!?!  Now you are all boy, all over the place, all about fun and making messes.  I love you so much and can’t imagine our lives without you in it!

Since this is your two year post I guess I better talk about what you’re up to these days. I used the picture above on your birthday invitation and even though it took me two weeks for you to give me a good smile, I LOVE this one.  I love that you can see the scrape on your knee which shows that you never slow down.  You actually got that scrape (which lasted for weeks!) when Mrs. Erin was taking our pictures and it didn’t even phase you until we took you inside to clean up the blood running down your leg.  You didn’t mind the scrape, but you sure didn’t want to come inside!

That perfectly describes you right now.  You rarely stop.  You go go go and would rather be outside playing with your golf clubs or baseball tee than anything else.  You naturally picked up a love of sports and love baseball, football, and golf so much.  They are your favorite things to watch on tv and you always want Daddy to throw the ball to you so that you can hit it when we’re playing inside.

IMG_3092

But occasionally you do slow down, especially when you have just gotten up.  You stand up when I walk into your room and you immediately say “Rock!” until I pick you up and we rock in your chair.  In the last few weeks you’ve started wanting to read books while we rock.  You will finally sit still enough to read books and we’re enjoying bringing you into our bedtime routine of reading.  You don’t mind Sissy’s princess books, but prefer the ones with big trucks and cars.

IMG_3058

You are also so silly!  You vary in emotions so quickly.  Most of the time you yell “No!” when I try and pull out my camera to take a picture, but after ice cream on the first day of school you cried “Purse!” until I pulled my phone out to take a picture of you.  You love getting tickled and pretending to tickle and your giggle is one of the most beautiful sounds that I’ve ever heard.

IMG_2960

Despite your typically happy nature, when it comes to food you are about the pickiest.  You love french fries but rarely touch chicken nuggets.  Hot dogs are your love language but we can’t get you to eat any other meat.  You could subsist entirely on fruit (especially banana’s and grapes) but won’t touch a vegetable.  And your most recent obsession is crackers.  One day you ate them for breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner.  I’m of the opinion that you’ll eat when you’re hungry so I’m not stressing about it.  The good news is that you still love the pouches of baby food which we give you every time we go out to eat and send in your lunch to school.  You will gobble down even the yuckiest sounding combinations like spinach, green pea, and pear.  So I’m guessing that you’re getting enough vitamins with your regular intake of those!

IMG_3111

I know you love Daddy and I, but I’m not sure that you love anyone more than your Sissy.  When we got to the carpool pickup line on Wednesday you started yelling, “Yay Sissy!” because you knew we were about to pick her up.  Every day when we drop her off at school you get pouty and whine “Sissy school” for a little while until I can get you distracted.  Y’all are each other’s favorite playmates and even though you’re starting to get into the sibling squabbles I’m so thankful that you have each other.

You are talking up a storm these days, even if it’s not always intelligible to everyone else.  Some of your favorites are saying “truck” for every truck that we ever pass in the car (as well as car, bus, big truck, etc).  You love your “ball” and all sports related words, especially when you pretend to hit a ball, yell “Run!” take off running around the house and then roll to the floor in the den while we yell “Safe!”.

You are so much fun little one and I love every second with you.  I’m loving that we’re getting to spend one on one time two morning’s a week while Charlotte’s in school and I love that you love Mrs. Net and Mrs. Su-Su at school too.  You are so sweet and kind and I cherish all the snuggles that you still give me.  You are a joy little boy and I can’t wait to see the boy and man that you grow in to!

Happy Birthday!

I love you every second, of every minute, of every day.

Celebrating Four

Charlotte turns four tomorrow (I’m in denial, I don’t know how we have a four year old!) and we started the celebrating on Sunday night with a family party at our house.  We enjoyed getting to spend some time visiting with family and I think they all enjoyed getting to see some “quality” Charlotte and James antics!

Even though the party was very low key (I just sent out emails) we still got a cake and did some sandwiches and salads from Which Wich.  This birthday is ALL ABOUT ARIEL!

Charlotte was very excited about her cake.  She was even more excited when I told her that Ariel was a figurine that she could put in her room and Flounder was a mirror that she could put in her purse.  She kept telling everyone that Ariel was a “magarine” which thoroughly confused everyone but they just smiled and told her how great that was.

Both of the kids excitement levels went through the roof when Sam and Abby arrived!

After dinner I insisted on a family picture before presents and cake.

Charlotte was so sweet opening presents.  She was so excited about everything and sweet to say “Thank You” (although after prompting).

Then it was time for cake!  Charlotte insisted that we sing Happy Birthday to “Baby Fish” which is what she’s been calling herself for the last few days.  I’m sure we’ll be confused when we watch this video in 10 years but it will make for a great story!

We had a wonderful time celebrating Charlotte’s fourth birthday.  She’s now looking forward to her party with her friends tomorrow!

James turns ONE!

Since we had already had James’ birthday party we had a low-key day planned for his birthday.  Of course, our plan was diverted a little when James got Sissy’s fever virus the night before his birthday.  I ended up taking him to the doctor on his birthday morning which is no fun at all!  He felt much better by then though and was only a little sad to be there.

Our birthday boy eating breakfast

James was playing in his crib for the traditional birthday-minute picture!

Show me that he’s one at the doctor

That evening we had our parents and Char Char over for a laid back dinner, cake, and presents.  With James’ sickness and Charlotte still not feeling great and us leaving for Tuscaloosa the next day I went the easy route with Mellow Mushroom pizza’s and a Nothing Bundt Cake.  They were both very good and I’m pretty sure James didn’t mind since he scarfed down his pizza and his piece of cake!

Charlotte was the big present-opening helper

James took a few steps holding on to his truck but then promptly sat down.  Over the last few weeks he’s taken some more though.  He’ll get to walking when he gets ready to!

The tunnel that we got James has been a huge hit with he and Charlotte.  They both love crawling through it.  And Daddy enjoyed playing in it that night too….

It’s hard to believe that we have a three year old and a one year old! Time is flying!

James at One Year

James had his one year checkup last week and I’ve got to make sure I get his stats in here or else how will I ever remember them?!?!  His doctor said that he looked great although his is a tee-niny little thing.  He seems like the perfect size to us but apparently he’s pretty skinny compared to other boys his age.  Since he will eat anything in sight and our doctor watched him eat an entire snack trap and still want more he didn’t seem really concerned about it.  His little fever virus over the last few weeks took a little bit of weight off of him too.

18″ head 30%
29″ height 25%
17.2 lb less than the 5%

I forgot to talk about his verbal skills in his one year post.  He is still just getting the hang of communicating but its fun watching him try new sounds out!  He now will say “woof woof” when you ask him what a puppy dog says.  But he will also say “woof woof” when you ask him what any animal says.  🙂  He says MaMa and DaDa now and I’m convinced that he’s said Sissy once or twice.  He can click his tongue when we do it and he tries to stick his tongue out and says “ah ah ah” when I brush his teeth.  He said “Bye Bye” and waved when someone told him bye at his birthday party but he hasn’t really recreated that.  Most everything else is still random syllables but he really seems to know what we’re saying most of the time and can usually indicate with his actuals or grunts and mumbles what he wants.  It’s fun getting to communicate with him!

Our One Year Old Boy

James,

Here we are.  ONE YEAR OLD!  This year has flown by and somehow you are a little boy now and not a baby anymore.  I am loving watching your personality develop — you certainly have a lot of it!  Here’s what you’re up to at one year old.

You are my sweet boy.  You smile a lot.  And giggle.  You love for me to tickle you and just giggle and giggle while I do it.  You love your Momma and as soon as you see me after I’ve been gone (a day, an hour, in the next room) you whine and beeline straight towards me.  I can’t say that I mind!

You always have something in your mouth.  You especially love putting Sissy’s toys in your mouth, but something is always there.  You have gotten two more teeth in the past month for a total of SIX.  Getting teeth has never been easy for you and Dr said today that you have a lot more about to come through, but you are still sweet despite the pain.

You finally mastered the sippy cup and straw a few days after I finished weaning you.  I did it early because I needed you to drink from a cup when you went to school and even now, a few weeks later, you won’t have anything to do with frozen/thawed milk or whole milk, you will only drink water.  Hopefully that will pass soon!  Other than that though you are a very easy eater and will eat anything that we put in front of you.  You gobble up fruit like it’s going extinct but you also eat veggies like that. Some of your favorites right now are Apple Jacks, strawberries, cereal bars, peanut butter and jelly, Cherrio’s, and spinach and pear buddy fruit.

You are still a good sleeper although since you’ve had a cold for the past few weeks you haven’t slept as soundly as normal.  You are still taking a morning nap (9:30 – 11) on days when you don’t have school and church and an afternoon nap (1-3:30).  You go to sleep around 7:15 and sleep until I wake you up around 8 (although you would sleep later if we let you).

You are a climber!  This is you trying to scale Charlotte’s bed a few weeks ago.  You will be up the stairs in seconds flat if we aren’t watching you.  And you try to climb on tables, cabinets, and anything else that you can get close to!

You love your Sister.  One of your favorite things is when we all get in her bed as we put her down for her nap and you get to crawl around amidst her and her babies.  You love crawling over her and both of you just giggle and giggle when you do it!

We went to the doctor for your cold/fever today and you weighed 17.06 lbs.  We go for your well visit next week so I’ll get percentages and height then.  But you are wearing 12 months clothes and some 18 months.  We recently switched to size 4 diapers just because we had some here when we ran out of the size 3’s.  And you wear a size 3 shoe.

You are all boy and we’ve seen that already with your first skinned chin.  You cry hard when you fall down but once we pick you up you calm back down pretty quickly.  Although, we can’t put you back down again for a while after a spill or you’ll just start crying again!

Some of your favorite things to do these days include seeing yourself in the phone’s camera, tearing down block towers, following Sissy around and doing whatever she’s doing, opening cabinets, crawling under furniture, chasing after balls while also having a ball in your mouth, and trying to get Luca’s toys.

You got your first haircut this month and look so grown up with your little boy cut!  Your Daddy told me that he wants me to let you grow it long again but I like your clean cut look.  Your hair is still very light compared to the rest of the family but it is getting darker so maybe it will end up as light brown.  Your eyes looks like they’re going to stay blue though and they are beautiful!

We love you so much James! You are so sweet and we are so thankful that you are a part of our family!
Happy Birthday!
love, Mommy
